Choose two things before downloading
The download itself is easy. The expensive mistake is grabbing the wrong edition or the wrong Windows build. Settle those two choices first, then get the file from Blackmagic Design or Blackmagic’s Mac App Store listing.

Start here unless you already have a Studio license. The free build is a complete editor, color, Fusion and Fairlight application, not a timed trial.

The 30-second answer
Most Windows computers need Windows x86
If your Windows PC has an Intel Core, Intel Core Ultra, AMD Ryzen or AMD Threadripper processor, the correct button is Windows x86. Blackmagic uses that label for its normal 64-bit Intel/AMD build. Windows ARM is for an ARM-based machine, commonly a Snapdragon PC. On a Mac, use Mac OS X. On Linux, use Linux.
What the vendor shows now
The official picker separates edition and platform
Blackmagic’s current modal puts Free and Studio side by side. Both columns then offer Mac OS X, Linux, Windows x86 and Windows ARM. Work from top to bottom. A Studio license does not transform the Free package after installation, and the ARM button is not a newer or faster choice for an ordinary Intel or AMD PC.
Edition first
Free and Studio are separate installers
The Free package is the sensible default when you have no Studio entitlement. The Studio package expects a software code, a license dongle or an assigned Blackmagic Cloud license. Still deciding? Platform second
Match Blackmagic’s label to the processor
The label x86 looks old, but the current Windows x86 package is still a 64-bit application. It is the normal branch for Intel and AMD desktops and laptops. Windows ARM is only for ARM hardware. Unsure what is inside the machine? Open Settings > System > About and read System type before committing to the archive.
Blackmagic gives Mac users one Mac OS X route rather than separate Intel and Apple silicon buttons. A successful download still says nothing about editing performance. Run the computer checker or read the dated Resolve 21 system requirements before assuming the machine is ready for real work.
Mac source choice
Blackmagic download or Mac App Store?
Both routes are legitimate, but they are not interchangeable in every edit suite. Blackmagic warns that its App Store build does not support some external control panels and may not work with every third-party OpenFX or VST plug-in. For a production Mac built around plug-ins or a control surface, I would take the direct Blackmagic build. The App Store remains a valid option when its update model matters more than those integrations.
Older versions
Use the official Support Center archive
An older build can be the right build when a plug-in, operating system or shared facility demands it. Fetch it from the Blackmagic Design Support Center, never a repackaging site. Write down the exact edition and version first. More importantly, do not point a newer project library at an older Resolve install until a restore has been tested.
Existing installation
Back up before replacing a working build
A completed download cannot tell you whether the new build will get along with your project library, plug-ins or hardware drivers. Make a restorable project or project-library backup, keep the installer for the version that works today, and open a disposable project first. When the download does not start
When nothing downloads, retrace the choice
- Go back to Blackmagic’s product page and reopen Free Download Now.
- Check the column first: Free on the left, Studio on the right.
- Check the platform button next, especially Windows x86 versus Windows ARM.
- If a form appears, complete only what the current official page requests. Blackmagic changes these surfaces, so a permanent “download without registration” trick would be a promise we cannot verify.
- Let the browser finish, then keep the original archive until installation and a real test project both succeed.
If the package arrives but Resolve will not install or launch, the download route has done its job. Move on to the operating-system floor, free storage, GPU path and driver requirements.
