DaVinci Resolve for Windows: Download & Install

Download from Blackmagic Design’s official Resolve page. Before choosing a Windows button, check both the processor type and whether Windows is 64-bit. If you are updating an existing installation, back up the project library and export the projects you cannot afford to lose before the new version opens them.

I checked Blackmagic’s current download catalog on September 7, 2026: the latest listed Free and Studio packages were DaVinci Resolve 21.0.4, dated August 5. If the official picker shows a newer release when you visit, read that release’s notes before installing it; the requirements and rollback warning below are specifically for 21.0.4.

Get the Windows Installer From Blackmagic, Not a Mirror

Blackmagic offers Free and Studio in its download picker. Choose the edition first, then the Windows architecture. The free download asks for registration details; the Studio support download offers a separate route for existing license holders. Use the labels shown by Blackmagic, not a Windows logo on an advertisement.

1. Open the official DaVinci Resolve product page.
2. Select Free Download Now or the Studio download option.
3. Pick the edition you actually intend to run: Free or Studio.
4. Match Windows x86 or Windows ARM to the system type.
5. Save the ZIP archive somewhere with enough free space to download and extract it.

We link to the developer rather than hosting or repackaging the installer. Check the destination before downloading: a page calling itself “latest” may still offer an older release. A fixed file-size or checksum copied from another site is not a substitute for matching the exact official package.

Windows x86 or ARM: Check System Type First

“Windows 11” identifies the operating system, not the processor architecture. On Intel and AMD PCs, Blackmagic labels its 64-bit x86 build “Windows x86.” That button does not mean a 32-bit Windows edition is supported. Snapdragon-based Windows machines use the separate ARM package only when they meet Blackmagic’s ARM requirements.

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to System, then About.
3. Find System type in the device-information section. Microsoft calls this Device specifications; some Settings layouts show Device info.
4. 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor means the Windows x86 package. Check both parts of the line.
5. An ARM-based processor sends you to the ARM requirements below before the download.

Blackmagic's Resolve 21.0.4 readme is narrower than “any ARM-based Windows PC.” It lists Windows 11 for ARM and a Snapdragon X Elite series processor, with 16GB of memory or 32GB for 4K or Fusion work. Another ARM processor is not automatically covered just because Windows itself runs on it.

Microsoft’s Windows architecture guide explains how System type separates the operating system from the processor. If it says 32-bit operating system, a different Resolve download button will not fix that limitation. Windows 11 itself is 64-bit only. Check the Current Windows Requirements

The table combines Blackmagic’s Resolve 21.0.4 minimum requirements with the architecture check above. Where the ARM readme does not specify a separate GPU or driver floor, that is stated explicitly—not filled in with an invented minimum.

Windows 10 compatibility is not the same as Windows support. Microsoft ended ordinary Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. For a new setup, I would use a supported Windows 11 installation. If you must keep Windows 10, check the support lifecycle and any Extended Security Updates eligibility for your exact edition separately.

Using Blackmagic video hardware for external monitoring? The Windows readme also requires Desktop Video 12.9 or later for that workflow. It is not a requirement to install Desktop Video merely to use an ordinary computer display.

These are compatibility checks, not a promise of smooth editing. Codec, resolution, bit depth, effects, multicam and Fusion can change the workload considerably. Free Is the Default; Studio Needs a License

Start with Free if you do not have a Studio license. Blackmagic’s current Studio download listing accepts a license dongle, a software activation code or a Blackmagic Cloud license. If Studio came with hardware you bought, check the included license details. Downloading the Studio installer alone does not activate it.

Protect an Existing Resolve Installation Before Updating

First installation? Skip to the install steps. Updating a working machine? Pause before 21.0.4 touches a production project.

Blackmagic says 21.0.4 makes an effort to keep the project library compatible with 20.3.2. It also warns that an individual project created or opened in 21.0.4 is no longer accessible in 20.3.2. That means uninstalling the new application does not by itself create a safe rollback.

1. Create a full project library backup.
2. Export separate backups of active, irreplaceable projects.
3. Record the current Resolve version and the GPU driver version.
4. Keep installation media and backups off the same working drive where practical.
5. Only then install the new release and open a copy of a representative project.

Our safe Resolve update workflow explains the backup and rollback steps. Keep the old installer if you may need it, but remember that it cannot reverse a project-format change; the pre-update backup is what protects that project.

Extract the ZIP and Install Resolve

Extract the complete ZIP before running setup. In File Explorer, right-click it and choose Extract All, following Microsoft’s extraction instructions. Run the installer from the resulting folder rather than from a ZIP preview.

1. Right-click the downloaded ZIP and choose Extract All.
2. Open the extracted folder after Windows finishes.
3. Run the DaVinci Resolve installer.
4. Review the publisher and file origin shown by Windows before approving User Account Control.
5. Follow the onscreen installer prompts.
6. Restart Windows if setup or a driver update asks for it.

The readme says the package also installs Blackmagic RAW Player, Blackmagic Proxy Generator and utilities for hardware control panels. Those names alone do not mean the download is wrong. Review the installer’s component descriptions before changing selections; do not install an unrelated offer simply because it appears beside a download button.

Verify the First Launch Before Moving Real Work

Reaching “Finished” tells you setup completed. A short test with footage you actually use checks something more useful: whether Resolve can open, find the media, play picture and sound, and produce an export on this computer.

1. Launch Resolve and confirm it reaches the Project Manager without a GPU initialization warning.
2. If this was an update, create a test library or open a duplicate project first.
3. Check that media, cache and gallery locations point to drives you actually intend to use.
4. Import a clip from your real camera, phone or screen recorder.
5. Play it, scrub it, add a simple correction and confirm audio output.
6. Export a short section using a normal delivery preset and play the rendered file outside Resolve.

Test the footage you expect to edit. A friendly H.264 sample does not validate a project built around 10-bit HEVC, RAW, mixed frame rates or heavy Fusion. The test only counts when it touches the codec and storage path you expect to use.

If Resolve Will Not Install or Open

Change one reversible thing at a time, keeping the exact error message. Do not delete project libraries, reset everything or turn off Windows protection to see what happens. How to Uninstall DaVinci Resolve on Windows

Blackmagic's current readme sends Windows users to Programs and Features, then DaVinci Resolve, then Uninstall. Current Windows settings also expose installed apps. Whichever route you use, removing the application is not the same operation as deleting project libraries, source media, cache or exports.

A reinstall does not require erasing project data. Back it up, uninstall Resolve, restart if needed, then reinstall the correct official build. Delete cache only when you understand which cache location belongs to the affected project and have confirmed that source media is safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DaVinci Resolve free on Windows?

Yes. Blackmagic Design offers a free Windows edition. Studio is separate and requires a valid activation code, license dongle or Blackmagic Cloud license. Downloading the Studio package alone does not activate it.

Should I download Windows x86 or Windows ARM?

Choose Windows x86 when System type shows a 64-bit operating system and an x64-based processor. Choose Windows ARM for an ARM-based computer that meets Blackmagic’s current ARM requirements, including the supported Snapdragon processor family. The Windows x86 label does not mean 32-bit Windows is supported.

Does DaVinci Resolve work on Windows 11?

Yes, Resolve 21.0.4 works on supported Windows 11 systems. The computer must also meet the memory, GPU, driver and processor requirements. Windows 11 by itself does not prove that a machine is suitable for Resolve or identify whether it needs the x86 or ARM installer.

How much RAM does DaVinci Resolve need on Windows?

Blackmagic's Resolve 21.0.4 minimum for Windows x86 is 16GB of system memory, or 32GB when using Fusion. Its Windows ARM minimum is 16GB, or 32GB for 4K or Fusion. These are compatibility minimums, not guaranteed smooth-performance targets.

Can I install DaVinci Resolve without uninstalling the old version?

An in-place update may work, but protect the project library first. Blackmagic warns that projects created or opened in 21.0.4 cannot then be opened in 20.3.2. Make a full library backup and export important individual projects before opening them in the new version.

Why does DaVinci Resolve not open after installation?

Check the exact error, the downloaded architecture, complete ZIP extraction, GPU support and graphics driver. Also compare the PC with the current minimum requirements. These are diagnostic starting points, not proof of one cause; avoid deleting project data or disabling Windows security.
