Quick answer: get DaVinci Resolve for Windows from Blackmagic Design's official page. On almost every Intel or AMD PC, the correct button is Windows x86. Windows ARM is for an ARM-based machine that also meets Blackmagic's current Snapdragon requirements. Already running Resolve? Get the Windows Installer From Blackmagic, Not a Mirror

Blackmagic puts Free and Studio on the same product page. A registration form may appear before the download begins. After that, the decision is specific: edition first, then Mac OS X, Linux, Windows x86 or Windows ARM. A generic Windows logo is not enough.

1. Open the official DaVinci Resolve product page.
2. Select Free Download Now or the Studio download option.
3. Pick the edition you actually intend to run: Free or Studio.
4. Match Windows x86 or Windows ARM to the system type.
5. Save the ZIP archive somewhere with enough free space to download and extract it.

This site does not host or repackage the installer. That is deliberate. A mirror can be stale even when its page title says “latest,” and a repackaged installer removes the simple chain of trust between you and Blackmagic. We also do not publish a fixed file size or an invented checksum because the public picker did not expose a stable signed hash during this review.

Windows x86 or ARM: Check System Type First

This is where the wrong click becomes a wasted download. “Windows 11” tells you the operating system, not the processor architecture. Most Intel and AMD desktops and laptops need the x86-64 build, labelled Windows x86 by Blackmagic. ARM laptops, including current Snapdragon models, take a different package.

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to System, then About.
3. Find System type under Device specifications.
4. An x64-based processor maps to Windows x86.
5. An ARM-based processor sends you to the ARM requirements below before the download.

Blackmagic's Resolve 21.0.4 readme is narrower than “any ARM-based Windows PC.” It lists Windows 11 for ARM and a Snapdragon X Elite series processor, with 16GB of memory or 32GB for 4K or Fusion work. Another ARM processor is not automatically covered just because Windows itself runs on it.

Check the Current Windows Requirements

These are Blackmagic's stated minimums for Resolve 21.0.4, not a promise of smooth playback with every codec, effect or Fusion composition.

A minimum is a launch boundary, not a comfortable editing specification. Codec, resolution, bit depth, GPU effects, noise reduction, multicam and Fusion can each move the real requirement. Free Is the Default; Studio Needs a License

Start with Free if you do not have a paid license. The Studio package makes sense when you already own an activation key, license dongle or an eligible Blackmagic product that included Studio. Downloading the paid package does not unlock it.

Protect an Existing Resolve Installation Before Updating

First installation? Skip to the install steps. Updating a working machine? Pause before 21.0.4 touches a production project.

Blackmagic says 21.0.4 makes an effort to keep the project library compatible with 20.3.2. It also warns that an individual project created or opened in 21.0.4 is no longer accessible in 20.3.2. That means uninstalling the new application does not by itself create a safe rollback.

1. Create a full project library backup.
2. Export separate backups of active, irreplaceable projects.
3. Record the current Resolve version and the GPU driver version.
4. Keep installation media and backups off the same working drive where practical.
5. Only then install the new release and open a copy of a representative project.

Extract the ZIP and Install Resolve

The Windows package arrives as a ZIP archive. Extract the whole thing before running setup. Launching an installer from inside a ZIP viewer can create missing-file or temporary-path failures that look like a Resolve problem but are really an extraction problem.

1. Right-click the downloaded ZIP and choose Extract All.
2. Open the extracted folder after Windows finishes.
3. Run the DaVinci Resolve installer.
4. Review the publisher and file origin shown by Windows before approving User Account Control.
5. Follow the onscreen installer prompts.
6. Restart Windows if setup or a driver update asks for it.

According to the current readme, the Resolve package also installs Blackmagic RAW Player and Proxy Generator. Seeing those components is not evidence that you downloaded the wrong package. Leave an unfamiliar item selected until you have checked whether the workflow uses Blackmagic RAW or watched-folder proxy generation.

Verify the First Launch Before Moving Real Work

An installer reaching “Finished” proves very little. Five minutes with a real camera clip can expose the wrong GPU driver, a dead media path or a broken export before a deadline depends on the machine.

1. Launch Resolve and confirm it reaches the Project Manager without a GPU initialization warning.
2. If this was an update, create a test library or open a duplicate project first.
3. Check that media, cache and gallery locations point to drives you actually intend to use.
4. Import a clip from your real camera, phone or screen recorder.
5. Play it, scrub it, add a simple correction and confirm audio output.
6. Export a short section using a normal delivery preset and play the rendered file outside Resolve.

Use the media that normally causes work. A friendly H.264 sample does not validate a project built around 10-bit HEVC, RAW, mixed frame rates or heavy Fusion. The test only counts when it touches the codec and storage path you expect to use.

If Resolve Will Not Install or Open

Change one reversible thing at a time. Randomly deleting preferences, project libraries or cache folders destroys the clues that point to the real failure. A machine below Blackmagic's current OS, processor, memory or GPU floor cannot be troubleshot into a supported configuration.

How to Uninstall DaVinci Resolve on Windows

Blackmagic's current readme sends Windows users to Programs and Features, then DaVinci Resolve, then Uninstall. Current Windows settings also expose installed apps. Whichever route you use, removing the application is not the same operation as deleting project libraries, source media, cache or exports.

A reinstall does not require erasing project data. Back it up, uninstall Resolve, restart if needed, then reinstall the correct official build. Delete cache only when you understand which cache location belongs to the affected project and have confirmed that source media is safe.

Is DaVinci Resolve free on Windows?

Yes. Blackmagic Design offers a free edition for Windows. DaVinci Resolve Studio is a separate paid edition that requires a valid activation key, license dongle or qualifying bundled license. Downloading the Studio installer alone does not activate Studio.

Should I download Windows x86 or Windows ARM?
