A DaVinci Resolve Studio activation key can be active on two computers at the same time, but the license belongs to one person. To move Studio to a replacement computer cleanly, open Resolve Studio on the machine you’re retiring, choose Help > Deactivate License, install the Studio build on the new computer and enter the same activation key there. If the old computer is dead, lost, stolen, reformatted or simply out of reach, the activation system has a failsafe reset. When no activations remain, activating another system can clear the previous activation instances, and you then enter the key again on the computers you still plan to use. Blackmagic staff describes that reset as recovery for failed or inaccessible systems. It was never meant as a way to rotate one key through a room full of workstations.

The Two-Computer Rule
Blackmagic’s current staff guidance is clear: an activation-key license is personal and covers two devices for the same person. It is not a two-user license. The desktop in your edit room plus your own laptop fits that rule. Two editors working on their own each need a license, even if they never launch Studio at the same moment.
The two computers can run different operating systems. A supported macOS machine and a supported Windows machine can share the same key. The key activates the Studio edition you download directly from Blackmagic Design; the free DaVinci Resolve installer stays free no matter what key you own. If Resolve never asks for a key and the About window doesn’t say Studio, check that you installed the Studio build.

Transfer the License When the Old Computer Still Works
If you can still open the old installation, release that activation before you wipe, sell, return or rebuild the machine. In DaVinci Resolve Studio, open the Help menu and choose Deactivate License. Resolve Studio closes once the deactivation finishes, so save your work first. That activation is now free for the replacement system.
I deactivate before anything that could leave the existing installation unreachable: a clean operating-system install, a motherboard swap, a drive migration, handing back a company laptop or getting rid of an old machine. A system restore or a big hardware change can make licensing see the rebuilt environment as another computer. Deactivating while the old system still runs takes the guesswork out.
Deactivating Studio leaves your projects, databases, LUTs, presets, plug-ins, fonts, media and render files where they are. Licensing and project migration are two separate jobs. Back up the project library and export critical projects before you change computers. After deactivation, hold off on erasing the old machine until you’ve confirmed the project backup restores and the media you need is reachable. An activation can always be moved again. Lost project data may be gone for good.
Activate Studio on the New Computer
- Download the current supported DaVinci Resolve Studio installer from Blackmagic Design Support.
- Install Studio on the replacement computer.
- Launch the application and choose the license-key option.
- Enter the activation key exactly as supplied. Hyphens and character groups help catch transcription mistakes.
- Complete online activation, then confirm that the application identifies itself as DaVinci Resolve Studio.
- Restore or reconnect your project library only after the application and storage paths are ready.
If only one of your two activations was in use, you can activate the new computer without deactivating the old one, and both stay active for your use. I’d still deactivate any machine that’s leaving service. That keeps your second activation free for a laptop, an emergency rebuild or the next planned replacement.
A cross-platform move needs no new purchase. Install the right Studio build for the new desktop operating system and enter the existing key. Platform-specific plug-ins, codecs, fonts, storage paths and project-library connections each need their own migration check, yet the activation key itself works across desktop platforms.
If the Old Computer Is Lost or Broken
Help > Deactivate License is out of reach once the computer won’t start. That’s the situation the activation reset was built for. Blackmagic staff explains that when both activation instances are taken and no activations remain, you can reset the prior activations as a fallback. The old instances are cleared, and you enter the key again on the one or two computers you want active.
This recovery path covers a corrupt disk, a failed machine, an operating-system reinstall that used up another instance, or a computer you no longer have. It also explains why activating a third system can make two previously working systems ask for the key again. The license hasn’t turned into a three-computer license. The activation set has been reset.
After a reset, launch Studio on each computer you still use and enter the key again. Expect the other previously activated installation to need reactivation too. Avoid starting a reset minutes before a deadline unless the existing systems are already unusable, because every machine you want to keep may need internet access and the key.
Blackmagic staff also warn that forcing resets too often in a short period can block the key for a while. That limit is a good reason to use normal deactivation whenever you can. If a reset won’t go through, contact Support with your proof of purchase. The reset protects you from a failed computer, and it was never designed as a license manager for swapping seats every week.
What a Third Activation Actually Does
The phrase “third activation” is easy to misread. An activation key allows two current activation instances. If you try to activate another computer while both are taken, the recovery flow can reset the old instances. You still end up with two seats at most.
Say a desktop and a laptop are both active. If you replace the desktop without deactivating it, the new desktop may trigger a reset, and the old desktop and the laptop can both lose their activation. You reactivate the laptop and the new desktop and you’re back to two active systems. If the old desktop still works, running Deactivate License first avoids all of that.
Signing out of Blackmagic Cloud collaboration is a separate thing. A standalone activation key isn’t tied to your Blackmagic Cloud account, and there’s no account device list where you could remove an old key activation. Cloud project libraries, media sync, presentations and Cloud licensing are related services, each with its own controls.
Fix “No Activations Left” and Key Errors
If Studio reports that no activations remain, work out what happened before you buy another license:
- Both intended computers are working: deactivate the one you are replacing from the Help menu.
- One computer is gone: continue with the failsafe reset, then reactivate the computers you still use.
- The same rebuilt computer used both instances: a disk restore or operating-system reinstall may have been recognized as another system. Reset and reactivate, then avoid repeating rebuilds without deactivation.
- The free edition is installed: download the Studio installer. The free application does not become Studio merely because a key exists.
- The key is rejected immediately: verify every character, remove stray spaces, and confirm that what you hold is an activation key. A Mac App Store receipt or a Cloud rental won’t work in that field.
- Activation repeatedly fails: check internet access, date and time, firewall or filtering rules, then contact Blackmagic Support or the authorized reseller with proof of purchase.
Keep the full error text and note what changed right before it appeared. “No activations left” points to activation state, while “Invalid key” or a missing key points somewhere else. A private capture of the full error helps your own support case, but keep the activation key out of public posts and forum images.
Activation Key, Dongle, Cloud Rental, and Mac App Store
The transfer steps above apply to a perpetual activation key bought from Blackmagic Design or an authorized reseller. USB Dongle
A Resolve Studio dongle works on one computer at a time and has to stay plugged in while Studio runs. Moving the license usually means closing the application, unplugging the dongle safely and launching Studio on the other computer. One dongle gives you no two-computer allowance.
The upside is physical portability, with no key to type and no online activation to reset. The downside is that the dongle takes a USB port and can be lost, damaged or left at another location. Treat it as the license itself and give it a safe way to travel and a safe place to live.
Blackmagic Cloud Rental
Blackmagic Cloud rental is account based and distinct from a standalone activation key. Blackmagic’s License Manager documentation says each rental license activates Studio on a single computer. To move it, open the license in the Cloud account, use License Details to deactivate the current computer, then sign in to Resolve Studio on the new computer with the assigned Blackmagic Cloud ID.
Deactivating a computer and unassigning a license from a person are two different actions. Deactivate the computer when the same assigned user moves to another system. Unassign the license only when the organization wants to hand that rental to someone else, under the account’s license-management rules.
Mac App Store Edition
The Mac App Store edition is bought and installed through Apple, and it comes with no Blackmagic activation key for the direct Studio installer. It works the other way too: a direct activation key, a dongle or a Cloud rental won’t work with the App Store download. If your receipt is from Apple, manage installation through the Mac App Store and the Apple account that made the purchase.
This matters most when you move from Mac to Windows. A direct Blackmagic activation key can cover supported desktop platforms, but an App Store entitlement stays inside Apple’s store. An App Store purchase holds no transferable key, even though both applications are called DaVinci Resolve Studio.
Store the Key Like a Financial Credential
Blackmagic staff recommends treating the activation key like cash. A standalone key usually can’t be recovered from a Cloud device dashboard. Keep the original card, the reseller invoice and the purchase email somewhere safe. Store a protected digital copy where it survives the loss of the editing computer, and keep the key out of project notes, unprotected image captures, shared folders and public support posts.
Write down which two computers you plan to keep active and note each planned deactivation. One license needs no complex asset system; a short private note prevents accidental resets during a hardware refresh.
If the key is lost or the failsafe reset is blocked, contact Blackmagic Design Support or the authorized reseller. Bring proof of purchase, the license type, the exact Studio version, the operating system and the complete error text. A reseller or support agent can’t reconstruct ownership from a cropped image with no order details.
Transfer Checklist
- Confirm that you own a Blackmagic activation key, dongle, Cloud rental, or Mac App Store edition.
- For an activation key, remember the limit: two computers for one person.
- Back up the project library, critical projects, presets, LUTs, plug-in information, and media paths.
- If the old computer works, choose Help > Deactivate License before wiping or returning it.
- Download and install the Studio build on the new computer.
- Enter the same activation key and confirm the application opens as Studio.
- If the old computer is unavailable and no activation remains, use the failsafe reset and reactivate both intended systems.
- Avoid repeated resets; contact Blackmagic Support if verification is required.
- For Cloud rental, deactivate the computer in License Details and sign in on the replacement.
- For a dongle, move the physical device. For the App Store edition, reinstall through Apple.
- Keep the key and proof of purchase outside the editing computer in secure storage.
The dependable transfer path is short: deactivate while the old computer still works, activate the Studio build on the replacement, and save the reset for machines you can’t reach. Once you know which license channel you own, the rest of the move becomes predictable.
