DaVinci Resolve Comparisons

Current DaVinci Resolve comparisons built around workflow, edition limits and the point where an upgrade or another editor actually makes sense.

A useful comparison starts with the work you need to finish, not a winner badge. These guides separate permanent edition limits from preferences, current pricing from old promotions and feature checklists from the daily cost of changing tools.

Quick answer: Start with DaVinci Resolve Free unless one named limit blocks a real project. Buy Studio when a required codec, resolution, AI tool, effect or collaboration feature justifies it. Compare Resolve with another editor only after testing the same representative project in both.

Test one representative project

A feature matrix cannot tell you where the daily friction lives. Use the same five-to-ten-minute project in both editions or applications:

  1. Import the camera and audio formats you actually receive.
  2. Build a short edit with titles, captions and one speed change.
  3. Repair a difficult dialogue clip.
  4. Grade one normal shot and one log or RAW shot.
  5. Open the motion-graphics or VFX handoff you regularly use.
  6. Export the client, platform or archive format you must deliver.
  7. Reopen the rendered file and test the project handoff on the second machine or with the second editor.

The winner is the tool that completes that loop with the fewest unsupported formats, manual workarounds and fragile handoffs. Blackmagic's current Resolve product page is the primary reference for edition capabilities; this hub explains how those differences affect actual choices.

What this hub will not do

It will not declare one editor best for everyone, repeat a vendor feature list or turn temporary promotions into permanent pricing claims. Each linked comparison owns one decision and states the tested versions, limits and tradeoffs. New editor comparisons belong here only after they have enough original testing to support a separate page.

Frequently asked questions

Is DaVinci Resolve Free enough?

It is enough for a large amount of professional editing, color, Fairlight, Fusion and delivery work. Studio becomes relevant when a specific codec, resolution, AI tool, effect or collaboration requirement justifies it.

Is DaVinci Resolve Studio a subscription?

Blackmagic publicly sells DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 as a $295 perpetual desktop license. Organization-managed licensing and hardware bundles are separate paths and should not be presented as a universal consumer subscription.

How should I choose between Resolve and another editor?

Test the same representative project: ingest, edit, titles, audio repair, color, handoff and delivery. Choose the application that meets the required collaboration and output needs with the lowest repeatable friction.
