For a client project, I needed to turn a one-person performance into a two-person interview scene. Cloning yourself in DaVinci Resolve comes down to two separate jobs: filming takes that line up as if two people shared the same space, then combining them so one version of you doesn't erase the other.
Quick answer: if your clones stand on opposite, non-overlapping sides of a locked frame, stack two takes on separate tracks and crop the upper clip at the split line to reveal the lower take underneath. Before You Film Yourself Twice for a DaVinci Resolve Clone Effect
Lock the camera down. A tripod that doesn't move between takes is the difference between a composite that lines up and one that fights you on every frame, because whichever method you use downstream is reading pixel position, and camera shake reads as motion whether your subject moved or not.
Lock exposure and white balance manually too, on the camera itself, before your first take. Auto white balance drifting between takes is a real problem that shows up as a visible seam right where your clones meet.
Record a few seconds of room tone before and after each performance, and mark a clap, spoken cue, or hand signal at the exact moment one clone needs to react to the other. Trim both clips to that cue once you're editing. Don't assume matching clip lengths on their own keep two takes in sync. What actually keeps them in sync is trimming both clips to the same reference moment, not the raw duration of either one.
Plan where each version of you stands and don't let those positions overlap. Mark floor positions with tape, and keep the background free of anything that moves on its own, curtains, ceiling fans, whatever. A single locked-off shot against a plain wall gets you further than an elaborate location with a shaky handheld pass.
Free Method: The DaVinci Resolve Split-Screen Clone Effect
The simplest version of this effect needs no drawn mask, AI isolation, or frame-by-frame rotoscoping. If your clones never cross a fixed line in the frame, this is the entire technique:
- Put your clean base take on the bottom video track, V1.
- Put your second take directly above it on V2.
- Select the V2 clip, open the Inspector, and open Cropping. Crop away the side of the frame you don't want from that clip, which reveals V1 underneath at the same boundary.
- If the seam is visible under your lighting, add a small amount of Softness in the Cropping section to blur the edge rather than leaving a hard line.

For a locked-off basic clone shot, the workflow is simply two tracks, Cropping, and a small amount of edge Softness. It runs entirely on the Edit page, in the free version, without touching the Color or Fusion pages at all. On a properly locked-off shot, the background in both takes should already line up, so don't reach for Position under Transform to fix a seam. Nudging the whole clip shifts wall lines, furniture edges, and perspective along with it, which usually creates a new, worse seam. Position is for correcting a very small camera bump. If the fixed background no longer lines up at all, stabilize the shot or reshoot instead.
This only holds up while your clones stay on their own side of that line. The moment they need to reach across it, you're into real masking, covered next.
Studio Method: Magic Mask for a DaVinci Resolve Clone Effect
Magic Mask uses the DaVinci AI Neural Engine and is available in DaVinci Resolve Studio, not the free version, according to Blackmagic's own Studio product page. The free version doesn't have a stripped-down version of the palette. It isn't there at all.
The current Magic Mask, which Blackmagic's own support team calls Magic Mask 2, builds its selection from clicked points rather than drawn strokes. If a tutorial you're watching shows someone dragging a paint stroke across themselves, that's the older Legacy Object Mask, still available from the three-dot menu, but it isn't the default workflow anymore.

- Open the Color page and select the clip for your first clone. Add a new node with Alt+S, or Option+S on Mac.
- Move to a frame where your full outline is visible and unobstructed, not necessarily the first frame of the clip. Open the Magic Mask palette and click once on yourself in the Viewer to add a point. Add more points, or subtract points, only where the mask misses you or grabs background it shouldn't.
- Set Quality to Better if the automatic pass looks rough, then track both forward and backward from that frame. If you only track forward from a frame in the middle of the clip, everything before it stays unmasked.
- Right-click an empty area of the node graph and choose Add Alpha Output, then connect the node's blue key output to the blue Alpha Output connector so the mask carries transparency instead of a color correction.
- From the Magic Mask palette's three-dot menu, choose Render in Place Magic Mask before you touch the next clone. Blackmagic's own release notes describe this as caching the tracked mask into an external traveling matte linked to the active node, cutting the live processing needed to keep grading.
Repeat that sequence per clone take, baking each one before you stack the next. Free Method: Power Window and Tracker Masking in DaVinci Resolve
The free version skips Magic Mask, but it doesn't skip masking entirely. Power Windows and the Tracker palette ship in every version of DaVinci Resolve, Studio or not, per Blackmagic's Color page feature rundown. What they don't do is replace Magic Mask's actual job.
A Power Window defines a shape. The Tracker can move, rotate, and scale that shape to follow an object through the frame. Neither one turns your shape into a semantic outline that reshapes itself around a moving arm or a turning body on its own. When your own outline changes, you're moving the window's points by hand at the frames where the shape actually changes, and letting Resolve interpolate between those points, not trusting one continuous track to hold a changing silhouette.

- On the Color page, add a node, then move to a frame where your full outline is visible and draw a Polygon or Curve window around yourself.
- Open the Tracker palette, set the mode to Window, and track both forward and backward from that frame for a shot where your position moves but your outline doesn't change much.
- For a shot where your outline does change, hand, arm, or turning body, add or move points at the specific frames where the shape shifts, rather than relying on the automatic track alone.
- Right-click an empty area of the node graph and choose Add Alpha Output, then connect the node's blue key output to the blue Alpha Output connector once the shape holds for the full clip.
For minimal movement, this kind of manual Power Window work stays manageable. Making Two DaVinci Resolve Clones Interact or Cross Paths
Split-screen crop only works while your clones stay on their own side of a fixed line. Looking at each other across that line doesn't break anything on its own. The moment a hand, body part, prop, shadow, or moving background object actually crosses the split line, that fixed boundary breaks and you're back into masking, whichever method you're using.

Use the sync cue from your shoot, the clap or hand signal, to find the exact frame where the interaction needs to land, and trim both clips to that frame before you mask anything. For the interaction itself, expect to add extra points or keyframes at the specific frames where your outline changes, whether you're rotoscoping by hand with a Power Window or letting Magic Mask track it. Resolve interpolates between the shapes you keyframe, but it can't determine the correct silhouette or occlusion order for a hand-off or a body turn on its own. You still have to set the keyframes that get that order right.
Fixing DaVinci Resolve Clone Effect Edges, Shadows and Sync
A flickering mask edge has more than one possible cause: noise in the footage, motion blur, something briefly occluding the edge, low contrast between you and the background, or a track that's actually drifted. Switch the Viewer to Highlight mode with Shift+H to inspect the matte or selected region directly before you change any setting, rather than guessing which of those you're dealing with.
If you keyed a clone off a green screen instead of masking flesh directly, don't fight fringing by maxing out Spill Suppression. Fix the alpha first: Restore Fringe on the Matte tab recovers edge detail that Threshold clipped out, and spill suppression only has real edge pixels left to correct once that's done. Shadows are the failure mode nobody warns you about. If the light source moves even slightly between takes, shadows fall differently in each clip, and the mismatch shows up right at the seam or mask edge where it's hardest to hide. Shoot every take back to back, and if you're near a window, watch the clock more than the frame.
A clean background plate isn't mandatory for the split-screen crop method, since one of your takes is already your base layer. It becomes useful when you need to remove a prop, rebuild an area of background hidden in both takes, correct inconsistent shadows between clones, or reorder which clone overlaps which.

Do you need DaVinci Resolve Studio to clone yourself?
