How to Blur a Face or Background in Resolve

Quick answer

To blur a moving face in DaVinci Resolve Free, open the Color page, add a serial node, draw a soft Power Window around the face, track it forward and backward, then increase Blur Radius on that node.

For privacy, use a dedicated Color node with a soft Power Window, track it forward and backward, then inspect every frame at final delivery size. For creative background blur, isolate the full subject and blur the outside region; that keeps the person sharp and therefore isn't anonymization. Resolve Free supports the Power Window path. Magic Mask 2, Depth Map, and Lens Blur are optional Studio routes for harder subject separation.

For privacy, I start with a Power Window because its boundary and track are easy to inspect. A simple oval is often more dependable than a detailed AI edge when the only requirement is to hide a face. For a natural portrait look, a full-body Magic Mask or depth matte is more appropriate because the viewer expects hair, shoulders, and foreground objects to remain in the right focus plane.

The final DaVinci Resolve 21 Reference Manual documents Power Windows, Window-mode tracking, the Color-page Blur palette, Mosaic Blur, and Outside nodes. Blackmagic’s current Studio feature page lists Magic Mask, object isolation and tracking, Depth Map, and Lens Blur among Studio tools.

Blur a Moving Face with a Power Window

  1. Open the Color page. Select the clip and place the playhead on a frame where the face is clear, reasonably large, and not covered.
  2. Add a dedicated serial node. Use Alt/Option+S and label the node Face Blur. Keeping privacy work separate makes it easy to inspect and disable.
  3. Draw an oval Power Window. Open the Window palette, choose the circle, and fit it around the entire recognizable area, not only the eyes and nose.
  4. Add margin and softness. Include forehead, chin, ears, and normal head movement. Feather the boundary so it doesn't look like a hard sticker.
  5. Track forward and backward. Open the Tracker palette and analyze in both directions from the clean reference frame.
  6. Apply the blur. Open the Blur palette and raise Radius until facial detail is no longer recognizable at final delivery size.
  7. Review the track. Play the full clip and stop on turns, fast motion, occlusions, and frames where the face approaches an edge.

The order of the first two operations is flexible: you can blur before tracking so the intent is visible while you work, or track the clean face first. What matters is that the selected node contains both the window key and the blur correction.

Make the Window Large Enough for Privacy

A beauty blur and an anonymizing blur aren't the same. A light softening effect can leave eye spacing, profile shape, scars, hairline, or a distinctive tattoo visible. I enlarge the protected region until ordinary head movement cannot expose those features, then judge the result at the exported resolution rather than in a small proxy Viewer.

Check other identifiers too: a name badge, license plate, house number, reflection, computer screen, and even a unique background can reveal more than the face. Separate targets should get separate nodes or windows so each one has its own track and strength.

Repair a Window That Drifts

Automatic tracking is an analysis, not a promise or a face detector. At the first bad frame, stop, return to the last correct frame, reposition or resize the window, and continue over a shorter segment. For privacy work, inspect every affected frame rather than assuming a successful analysis means complete coverage.

  1. Find the last correct frame and the first incorrect frame.
  2. Reposition or resize the window on the first bad frame.
  3. Track forward only until the next difficult moment.
  4. When the face is covered, use manual keyframes through the occlusion.
  5. When it becomes visible again, set a clean window and resume automatic tracking.

For a face that leaves and re-enters frame, I keep the window outside the visible image while the person is absent instead of letting it float over another subject. Soft Blur or Mosaic?

Soft blur is less distracting and works well when the goal is simply to remove recognizable detail. Increase the node’s Blur Radius and soften the Power Window edge. Don't stop at a flattering portrait softness; pause on the sharpest source frame and test whether facial features remain identifiable.

Mosaic Blur is documented in the final Resolve 21 manual as a pixelated blur suitable for hiding an anonymous witness’s face, and it isn't labelled Studio-only there. Apply it to the masked node and choose cells large enough to remove recognizable detail in the final file. Confirm the effect is present in your installed build; neither mosaic nor soft blur is a guarantee of anonymity.

Blur Multiple Faces

Give each moving face its own serial node and Power Window. That sounds repetitive, but independent tracks are easier to repair when people cross or move at different speeds. Rename the nodes Face 1, Face 2, and so on; the node graph should tell you what is protected without toggling everything on and off.

You can place several windows on one node for static targets, but their tracking data and corrections become harder to troubleshoot. For privacy-critical work, clarity beats a compact node tree.

Blur the Background and Keep the Person Sharp

A small inverted oval keeps the face sharp but blurs the person’s hair, body, and anything crossing the window. That can work as a stylized vignette; it isn't convincing shallow depth of field and it doesn't protect the identity of the sharp subject. Keep this creative branch separate from the privacy workflow.

In Resolve Studio, use Magic Mask 2 for a person-shaped isolation:

  1. Add a new Color node and open Magic Mask 2.
  2. On a clear reference frame, place one add click inside the subject. Version 2 no longer has separate Person and Object modes.
  3. If the first matte includes a background object, place one subtract click on that object and check the Click List.
  4. Track the mask forward and backward through the clip.
  5. Inspect the matte overlay around hair, hands, and gaps between limbs.
  6. Use the outside/inverted region for the background correction.
  7. Add moderate blur and refine the matte edge before increasing strength.

The Resolve 21 Magic Mask guide covers click tracking, first-failure repair, and Render in Place. Use Depth Map when the creative effect should vary across several depth planes; use Magic Mask when the decision is simply “subject sharp, everything else softer.” Neither method belongs in the anonymization branch while the subject remains sharp.

Background Blur in Resolve Free

Resolve Free can blur outside a Power Window. For a locked-off interview, draw a custom Curve window around the person, soften and track it, then create an Outside node or invert the key input before applying blur. This is most dependable when the silhouette is simple and doesn't cross foreground objects.

For hair, moving hands, and frequent occlusions, move the isolation to Fusion. A duplicated sharp foreground over a blurred background can work, but it requires a maintained matte. When an Adjustment Clip Helps, and When It Does Not

An adjustment clip is useful for a static full-frame blur or a treatment that spans several clips. It doesn't isolate a moving face by itself. You still need a mask and tracking strategy, and the adjustment clip affects every visible layer beneath it unless the effect is constrained.

Use a clip-level Color node for identity protection because the effect starts and ends with the source clip. Use an adjustment clip only when its timeline coverage is intentional; the adjustment clip guide explains its stacking behavior.

Blackmagic’s Studio feature page explicitly lists Magic Mask, object isolation and tracking, 3D Depth Map, and Lens Blur. None is required for a conventional tracked face blur: Power Windows, Window tracking, the Color-page Blur palette, and manual Fusion masks provide the core Free route. The final manual also lists Mosaic Blur without a Studio-only mark, but verify availability in the installed build before promising that effect in a production workflow.

Fix Common Blur Problems

The blur drifts off the face

Return to the first incorrect frame, reposition the window, and track a shorter section. Disable tracker dimensions that do not match the motion if they introduce unwanted rotation or perspective changes.

The window edge is obvious

Increase softness and slightly enlarge the window. A high-contrast grade can reveal the edge, so judge the blur after the main correction. The beginner Color-page workflow helps keep the node order understandable.

The blur vanishes during an occlusion

Keyframe through the covered frames, then restart tracking from a clean frame after the face returns. Don't let the tracker jump to the object causing the occlusion.

The face is still recognizable

Increase the protected area and blur strength, then check profile frames, reflections, and the final output size. Hiding only the center of the face is rarely enough.

The background mask flickers around hair

Refine the matte, reduce an unnecessarily strong blur, and repair weak frames. Depth discontinuities, motion blur, and fine hair can reveal an AI mask even when the overlay looks acceptable on one frame.

Playback becomes too slow

Cache or render the effect for review, especially with several Studio masks or depth effects. Never approve the mask from skipped frames; inspect a full-quality render before delivery.

The Privacy Check I Use Before Export

I watch once while looking only at mask boundaries, then again while actively trying to identify the subject. I check the first and last frame of every blurred section, frame edges, mirrors, screens, plates, badges, tattoos, and moments where two people cross.

Blur changes visible picture detail; it doesn't create guaranteed anonymity. Voice, clothing, location, metadata, reflections, and context can still identify someone. For normal grading around the protection nodes, return to the DaVinci Resolve color-grading hub.

Can I blur a face in DaVinci Resolve Free?

Yes. Add a Color-page node, draw and track a Power Window, then raise Blur Radius. Magic Mask isn't required for a conventional moving-face blur.

How do I blur the background but keep a person sharp?

Isolate the full person, invert or use the outside region, and apply blur there. Magic Mask or Depth Map makes this faster in Studio; tracked custom masks can do it in Free.

Should I use blur or mosaic for anonymization?

Either can remove recognizable picture detail when the protected area, strength, and tracking hold at final resolution, but neither guarantees anonymity. Soft blur is less distracting; mosaic makes the treatment obvious. Check every frame plus reflections, clothing, location, voice, and other contextual clues.

Why does the Power Window stop following the face?

Occlusion, fast motion, motion blur, leaving frame, or a poor reference frame can break the analysis. Repair from the first failed frame and keyframe difficult sections.

Can I track more than one face?

Yes. Use separate nodes and windows so every face has independent tracking and blur strength. This is easier to repair when people cross.

Does strong blur guarantee anonymity?

No. A missed frame, reflection, profile, voice, location, clothing, or other contextual clue can still reveal identity. Review the complete final render, not only the mask overlay.
