Blackmagic's Resolve 21.0.4 readme lists 8GB of system memory on Mac, or 16GB when using Fusion. On Windows it lists 16GB, or 32GB with Fusion, plus a GPU with at least 4GB of VRAM. Those are compatibility floors. They're too low to use as a comfortable 2026 buying target for many real projects. Apple's current MacBook Pro specifications list hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW, plus AV1 decode. That can help supported media paths, but it isn't a promise that every codec, effect stack or third-party plugin plays in real time.

The M5 Pro configuration uses an 18-core CPU, a 20-core GPU and 307GB/s memory bandwidth. In Notebookcheck's tested M5 Pro unit, current PugetBench Resolve Standard and Extended results were competitive with many creator laptops in its comparison set. That supports the overall recommendation without pretending every Resolve timeline behaves identically.

Choose it if: you edit professionally, move between locations, value battery life and work across a mix of codecs rather than one narrow GPU-heavy task.

Skip or step up if: your work is dominated by demanding Fusion, temporal effects or high-resolution RAW and every saved render minute has measurable value. Compare an M5 Max configuration or a larger-VRAM Windows system, but do it against your own project files before spending the premium.

2. MacBook Pro 14 with M5 Pro: Best Portable Pro Choice

Buy: M5 Pro, 24GB for mainstream editing or 48GB for heavier Fusion and multitasking, with a 1TB SSD.

The 14-inch model is the better choice when the laptop genuinely travels. It keeps the M5 Pro codec support and professional I/O in a smaller body. The trade is straightforward: less screen area for Resolve's dense interface and less thermal capacity than the 16-inch chassis during long, difficult jobs.

Don't spend all of the budget on the processor and accept a cramped SSD. Resolve projects accumulate source media, proxies, optimized media, cache and exports quickly. A 1TB internal SSD is the practical floor for a primary editing laptop even if active media lives on a fast external drive.

Buy: RTX 5070 Ti 12GB, 64GB system memory and 2TB SSD where that exact configuration is available. An RTX 5070 8GB model is a balanced alternative for less GPU-heavy work.

The ProArt P16 makes sense when you want Windows, NVIDIA acceleration and a chassis designed around creative work rather than gaming aesthetics. The problem is the product name: ASUS lists materially different regional configurations, including GPUs with different VRAM capacities. “ProArt P16” isn't a complete specification.

The RTX 5070 laptop variant has 8GB of VRAM, while the RTX 5070 Ti variant has 12GB. That extra capacity is useful when your normal work includes GPU memory pressure, complex grades, high-resolution sources or temporal processing. It doesn't guarantee a proportional speed gain in every job.

That distinction matters because Notebookcheck's RTX 5070 ProArt P16 review found that its tested 64GB/2TB unit wasn't dramatically faster than the preceding RTX 4070 model. Buy the verified configuration and measured capability, not the generation badge.

Regional models and memory options still vary, so use the part number rather than trusting a retailer's shortened title.

This is the better Windows path for regular Fusion work, noise reduction and long effects-heavy sessions. It's also heavier, its power brick is part of the travel weight, and maximum performance normally assumes wall power. If most of your work is cuts, basic grades and portable editing, that compromise may not pay you back.

5. Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 10: Sensible New Windows Value

Buy: RTX 5060 8GB, 32GB system memory and 1TB SSD.

A current Legion 5i configuration with those exact specifications is a credible lower-cost entry into Resolve. It clears a more useful bar than “meets minimum requirements,” while avoiding the false promise that the cheapest discrete GPU laptop is ready for every 4K or Fusion job.

Eight gigabytes of VRAM can serve balanced 4K editing, especially when you manage proxies, cache and effects. It provides less room for high-resolution textures, demanding temporal processing and larger Fusion compositions than a 12GB configuration. If Resolve already reports GPU memory full errors in your normal projects, don't treat another 8GB GPU as a durable upgrade without testing.

It's silent, light and well suited to selects, proxy editing, short-form delivery and travel work.

It is fanless. Independent sustained-load testing from RTINGS reports performance reduction during prolonged heavy work as the chassis manages heat. That's the reason to keep the recommendation at light and proxy workflows. If your routine includes long exports, noise reduction or large Fusion comps, buy a cooled MacBook Pro instead.

Mac or Windows for DaVinci Resolve?

Choose Mac when portability, battery life, quiet operation and Apple's supported media engines are central to the workflow. The M5 Pro MacBook Pro is especially compelling when you move between set, office and home and want consistent capability without tuning a Windows laptop's performance modes.

Choose Windows when you want a dedicated NVIDIA GPU, visible VRAM capacity, replaceable storage or memory on selected models, and more choice in cooling and price. Windows also makes it easier to target 12GB or more of dedicated VRAM without moving to Apple's highest tiers.

Storage

Choose at least 1TB for a primary editing laptop when possible. A 512GB model can work for a travel machine if projects and cache live on fast external storage, but it needs active space management. Keep source media, cache and backups planned as separate responsibilities. One large internal SSD is not a backup.

Display and ports

A wide-gamut, accurate internal display is valuable for editing and client review. It isn't automatically a controlled reference-monitoring path.
