DaVinci Resolve is free. Blackmagic currently lists DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 at $295 in the United States as a one-time desktop license. Blackmagic Cloud's current rental guide shows $30 per month per license in its US example, and the US iPad Studio upgrade is a separate $94.99 in-app purchase. Regional tax, currency, platform and reseller totals can differ.

Prices checked August 25, 2026\. Verify the live [Blackmagic Studio product page](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/studio?ref=davinciresolveclub.com), the [Blackmagic Cloud rental guide](https://help.cloud.blackmagicdesign.com/license-manager/renting-davinci-resolve-studio-licenses/?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) and the [US iPad App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/davinci-resolve-for-ipad/id1581363826?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) before paying. These are separate purchase or access paths.

Blackmagic has delivered major Studio updates through Resolve 21 without charging existing activation-key customers a separate major-version fee. That history adds value, but it isn't a published contractual promise that every future major release will always be free.

## DaVinci Resolve Pricing: Free vs Studio at a Glance

Free includes the core Edit, Color, Fusion and Fairlight workflows; Studio adds paid processing and delivery capabilities. Use the [Resolve Free feature guide](https://davinciresolveclub.com/davinci-resolve-free-version-features/) for the full no-cost boundary and the [Free versus Studio comparison](https://davinciresolveclub.com/davinci-resolve-vs-studio/) for feature-by-feature buying decisions. The dividing line is the required source, tool and output, not whether the editor is a beginner or professional.

Studio also adds over 45 additional Resolve FX, immersive-audio features, professional HDR scopes and supported H.264/H.265 hardware decode and encode paths. Exact format support varies by operating system, container, codec, profile and bit depth.

- Free: core editing, grading, Fusion, Fairlight, collaboration and Ultra HD 60 delivery
- Studio: paid AI, video noise reduction, higher output, advanced HDR, multiple GPUs and additional formats/effects

## Free Version: What You Actually Get

Free is unusually complete: Cut and Edit pages, node-based Color tools, Power Windows, curves, qualifiers, scopes, Fusion compositing and Fairlight audio are included. The license doesn't expire and Blackmagic doesn't place its own watermark on the output.

[![Official Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 page showing Free download and $295 Studio purchase options](https://storage.ghost.io/c/a9/29/a929429b-cfab-4467-b902-a0cd9c90feac/content/images/2026/08/official-studio-pricing-hero.png)](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/studio?ref=davinciresolveclub.com)

Blackmagic's current US Studio page lists Resolve Free at $0 and Resolve Studio 21 at $295\. The August 16 browser capture was rechecked on August 25, 2026; tax, currency and reseller totals can differ.

The published desktop output ceiling is Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at 60 fps. That doesn't mean Free can't import every source above 4K: source decode and output resolution are separate questions. Check the current [Resolve 21 system requirements](https://davinciresolveclub.com/davinci-resolve-system-requirements-2026/) and test the real camera file before buying hardware or Studio.

The clearest reasons to consider Studio are:

- A required master exceeds Ultra HD 3840 × 2160 or 60 fps
- The grade requires temporal or AI spatial video noise reduction
- A paid tool such as Magic Mask, text-based editing, Voice Isolation or IntelliSearch is required
- The delivery requires Dolby Vision, HDR10+, stereoscopic 3D or another Studio-only format
- A supported hardware-codec or multiple-GPU path removes a measured bottleneck

## Studio Cost: Is the $295 Worth It?

Studio is worth $295 when one verified paid capability removes enough time, quality risk or compatibility risk from a real project. It isn't worth buying merely because a tutorial calls Free limited or because the source camera records above 4K.

Studio is worth $295 if any of these apply to your work:

- You repeatedly need Studio video noise reduction or a named paid AI tool
- A client requires output above Ultra HD 60 or a Studio-only HDR/package format
- Your exact codec and supported hardware benefit from Studio acceleration
- A Windows or Linux workstation can use multiple processing GPUs for the real workload

Stay on Free when your source files open correctly, the grade and audio work don't need paid tools, and the final master fits Ultra HD 60\. Collaboration and standard HDR grading are already included in Free, so neither is a reason to upgrade by itself.

Treat Blackmagic’s update history as a bonus, not the purchase case. Buy for features available in the current release and preserve the activation key or dongle. Future pricing can change even though major upgrades have historically remained available to existing Studio customers.

[![DaVinci Resolve Free, $295 desktop Studio, $30 cloud rental and $94.99 iPad Studio access paths](https://storage.ghost.io/c/a9/29/a929429b-cfab-4467-b902-a0cd9c90feac/content/images/2026/08/purchase-paths-20260825-v2.png)](https://help.cloud.blackmagicdesign.com/license-manager/renting-davinci-resolve-studio-licenses/?ref=davinciresolveclub.com)

Four separate paths: Free desktop, the $295 US desktop purchase, a $30/month per-license Blackmagic Cloud example for personal or organization profiles, and the separate $94.99 US iPad purchase.

## Studio Rental Licenses

Blackmagic's current [License Manager guide](https://help.cloud.blackmagicdesign.com/license-manager/renting-davinci-resolve-studio-licenses/?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) lets you rent Studio from a personal or organization profile. Its official example shows five licenses totalling $150 per month, which is $30 per license per month. Treat that as the documented US example and confirm the live total in the profile that will own the rental.

At $30 per month, ten billed months total $300, slightly more than the $295 US desktop list price. That arithmetic is not a like-for-like license comparison: a personal activation key is intended for two devices used by one person, while Blackmagic's cloud guide says each rental license activates one computer. Rental makes sense when short-term access, assignment or centralized billing matters more than long-term ownership.

Before renting, confirm the billing region, owner profile, seat count, renewal date, cancellation terms and device requirement. Personal profiles can own a rental; Organizations add group assignment and centralized administration for teams.

## Hardware Bundles That Include Studio

The current [Speed Editor technical specification](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/techspecs/W-DRE-08?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) lists the hardware at $435 in the United States and explicitly includes a DaVinci Resolve Studio activation key. Other cameras, panels, reseller bundles, used hardware and regional inventory must be checked by exact SKU.

| Purchase | Current public price | License rule |
| --------------------------------- | -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 desktop | $295 US list price | One-time purchase; cloud rental is separate |
| DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor | $435 US list price | Current official specification includes a Studio activation key |
| Blackmagic camera or panel | Varies | Check the exact product's What's Included section |
| Used hardware or reseller bundle | Varies | Require written confirmation of license type and redemption status |

For the current Speed Editor SKU, the official inclusion is confirmed rather than assumed. The value isn't automatically $435 minus $295: buy the hardware only if the editing controls are useful, and verify that the activation key is present and unredeemed when purchasing used or reseller stock.

If a camera or panel includes Studio, confirm whether the box contains an activation key or dongle and whether it has already been redeemed or removed. Used hardware listings deserve extra caution because the license may not transfer with the device.

[![Official Blackmagic Speed Editor specifications listing the included DaVinci Resolve Studio activation key](https://storage.ghost.io/c/a9/29/a929429b-cfab-4467-b902-a0cd9c90feac/content/images/2026/08/official-speed-editor-included.png)](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/techspecs/W-DRE-08?ref=davinciresolveclub.com)

The current Blackmagic Speed Editor technical specification explicitly lists a DaVinci Resolve Studio activation key under What's Included. Verify the exact SKU and reseller box contents before paying.

## Resolve for iPad: Cost and App Store Purchases

DaVinci Resolve for iPad is free to download. The [US App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/davinci-resolve-for-ipad/id1581363826?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) currently shows the Studio in-app purchase at $94.99\. That purchase is separate from the standard desktop activation key, dongle and Mac App Store license; regional App Store prices can differ.

Feature availability depends on the iPad model and current app version. Use Blackmagic's [Studio and iPad feature matrix](https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/SupportNotes/DaVinci%5FResolve%5FStudio%5F20%5FFeatures.pdf?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) to verify the tool, then confirm the live in-app price on the device that will own the purchase.

Budget desktop and iPad separately. One payment doesn't unlock both license paths.

## Resolve vs Premiere Pro: What You Pay Over Time

Adobe's [current US Premiere plan page](https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere.html?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) lists the individual app at $22.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly. At that list price, 13 months totals $298.87 before tax, slightly above a $295 Studio desktop license. The full [Resolve versus Premiere comparison](https://davinciresolveclub.com/davinci-resolve-vs-premiere-pro/) separates that arithmetic from workflow, included services and team handoffs.

That arithmetic isn't the complete cost comparison. Premiere also includes services such as Frame.io and Adobe Express, and Creative Cloud Pro may already be required for After Effects, Photoshop or other applications. Resolve can reduce recurring software spend, but hardware, storage, plugins, training and handoffs still belong in the budget.

Don't claim Resolve is cheaper for every team or that Adobe will raise a price. Compare the same region, commitment, seats, included services and cancellation terms over the planned ownership period. Then add the actual workflow cost shown in the first visual.

Color architecture also changes labor cost, but node counts aren't a price argument. Resolve’s dedicated Color page may reduce handoffs for a finishing-heavy job; an Adobe-centered team may save more by staying inside its existing asset, motion-graphics and review pipeline.

## Resolve vs Final Cut Pro: One-Time Purchase or Creator Studio

Apple now offers two US paths: a $299.99 one-time Final Cut Pro purchase and Apple Creator Studio at $12.99 per month or $129 per year. Apple's [current pricing announcement](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/01/introducing-apple-creator-studio-an-inspiring-collection-of-creative-apps/?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) says the subscription includes a wider app collection, while the one-time Final Cut Pro version remains available. Resolve Studio stays at a $295 US desktop list price and runs on macOS, Windows and Linux.

Do not compare $12.99 with $295 as if the products and access periods were identical. Compare the apps included, platform, ownership period and the workflow your team will actually run; the one-time Final Cut and Resolve prices are only $4.99 apart before tax.

A price table can't decide between editing models. Run one representative job through the applications you're considering, including graphics, color, audio, one revision and export QC.

## Resolve 21: What's New and Still $295

Resolve 21 remains part of the same $295 Studio desktop offering on the current product page. Existing Studio activation-key users have received the major release without a separately listed upgrade charge, continuing the company’s historical practice.

![DaVinci Resolve workflow cost including license, hardware, media storage and production time](https://storage.ghost.io/c/a9/29/a929429b-cfab-4467-b902-a0cd9c90feac/content/images/2026/08/workflow-cost-v1.webp)

Compare the same job across software access, hardware, media storage and production time. A one-time license can still sit inside an expensive workflow.

Resolve 21 adds the Photo page, IntelliSearch, CineFocus, AI Speech Generator and other tools documented in the current [Resolve 21 release guide](https://davinciresolveclub.com/davinci-resolve-21-whats-new/). Many headline AI tools require Studio. Buy for a recurring task, not for the number of features in a launch list.

The public Studio list price is unchanged at $295 at this check. Recheck before buying because regional pricing, taxes and reseller offers can change independently of the US product page.

## Frequently Asked Questions About Resolve Cost

### Is DaVinci Resolve really free?

Yes. Blackmagic offers Resolve 21 Free at $0\. It includes the core Edit, Color, Fusion and Fairlight workflow, multi-user collaboration and output up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at 60 fps within the documented format limits.

### How much is DaVinci Resolve Studio?

The current US desktop list price is $295\. Tax, currency and reseller pricing can change the checkout total, so verify the current regional listing before purchase.

### Is DaVinci Resolve Studio a one-time purchase?

The standard desktop Studio path is a $295 one-time license rather than a required subscription. Blackmagic also offers a separate cloud rental; its current official example is $30 per month per license and supports personal or organization profiles. The iPad Studio upgrade is another separate purchase.

### Are future DaVinci Resolve Studio upgrades free?

Blackmagic has provided major Studio upgrades through Resolve 21 without a separately listed upgrade charge for existing activation-key customers. That history is useful, but it is not a contractual promise that every future major release will always be free.

### Is the Studio upgrade worth $295?

It is worth paying when a required Studio-only tool, codec path or delivery format removes a recurring blocker. Stay on Free when the tested media, processing and final master fit its limits.

### Is there a student discount for DaVinci Resolve Studio?

Blackmagic does not list a universal public student price for the individual desktop Studio license. Institutions and regional promotions may differ, so verify any education offer directly.

### Does the Speed Editor include DaVinci Resolve Studio?

The current US Speed Editor technical specification lists a DaVinci Resolve Studio activation key under What's Included. Verify the exact SKU and written reseller listing because used hardware, regional inventory and older stock can differ.

### How much is DaVinci Resolve Studio for iPad?

The US App Store currently lists the iPad Studio in-app purchase at $94.99\. It is a separate purchase from the standard desktop activation key or dongle, and regional App Store pricing can differ.

### Can I use DaVinci Resolve Studio on multiple computers?

A [Blackmagic Design product manager states](https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?p=1118230&t=215459&ref=davinciresolveclub.com) that a personal activation key is intended for two devices used by the same person. A dongle works on the computer where it is connected, while a cloud rental license activates one computer and can be moved through License Manager.
