# DaVinci Resolve Shot Matching: Match Clips Correctly

**Quick answer:** on the Color page, select the clip or clips you want to change. Then right-click the good reference clip and choose **Shot Match to This Clip**. Resolve moves the selected targets toward the reference in color and contrast. Treat that result as a starting match: normalize the footage first, use ungraded targets, and check every cut in split screen and scopes.

The direction is easy to reverse. You don't right-click the bad clip and ask it to match itself. Select the targets first, then right-click the reference. If the automatic result is useful, refine it. If it isn't, remove the dedicated Shot Match node and match the shot manually.

## What Shot Match changes, and what it cannot repair

Shot matching is scene balancing: making angles from the same setup feel consistent in exposure, color balance, contrast and saturation. Blackmagic's [current Color page](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/color?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) describes Shot Match as matching a working clip to the color, contrast and brightness of a selected clip. It isn't a repair tool for clipped highlights, crushed shadows or camera data that was never recorded.

The [Resolve 21 Reference Manual](https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/UserManuals/DaVinci%5FResolve%5F21%5FReference%5FManual.pdf?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) is more precise about the limit. Shot Match tries to bring clips closer without stretching a weak image until it falls apart. Ask it to make an underexposed interior equal a noon exterior and it may split the difference. That restraint is useful, but it also means the command cannot force unrelated lighting into a convincing match.

The automatic correction is designed as a neutral starting point, not a finished creative grade. Build the scene look after the shots agree, not inside the reference clip you're using to calculate the match.

## Choose a reference shot that makes sense

A good reference represents the scene you want the audience to believe. Look for a clip with stable exposure, a useful view of skin or neutral objects, no large temporary color wash and enough tonal detail to judge. The prettiest frame isn't always the best reference. A heavily stylized close-up can be a poor target for a wide shot with different lighting and background colors.

If the reference has already been corrected, keep that correction simple. Blackmagic recommends basic Lift, Gamma and Gain work for the reference. Complex curves, qualifiers and secondaries make the automatic comparison less reliable. A good node order is normalization, primary balance, Shot Match, then the scene look.

## Normalize log and mixed-camera footage before matching

Shot Match works best when the target and reference live in a common normalized space. The current manual says the control was developed around Rec.709 gamma 2.4 and recommends Resolve Color Management as a way to normalize media first. That doesn't mean every project must be converted manually to Rec.709\. It means the algorithm should compare equivalent image states.

Don't ask Shot Match to compare unnormalized LogC with unnormalized RED Log3G10, or a normalized clip with a flat log clip. Those signals encode tone and color differently. Resolve may produce a change, but the comparison isn't a sound basis for the scene. Use a consistent managed pipeline or verified transforms first. Keep selected target clips ungraded. Existing node adjustments change the input the algorithm sees and can make the result unpredictable. If a target already has a grade worth protecting, duplicate the version or create a clean version before testing Shot Match.

## How to use Shot Match to This Clip

1. Open the **Color** page and show the thumbnail timeline.
2. Select one target clip that needs to change. Shift-click a range, or use the platform's additive-selection modifier for nonadjacent targets, only after a one-clip test works.
3. Click the node that should contain the Shot Match adjustment. A dedicated serial node keeps the operation removable.
4. Right-click the good reference clip. The reference may be outside the target selection.
5. Choose **Shot Match to This Clip**.
6. Compare the target and reference in split screen, then play across the cut.

Select the clips that will change first. Right-click the reference clip and run Shot Match from that reference's context menu.

The command can use one target or several. Resist the temptation to select the whole timeline on the first pass. Similar camera angles usually respond more consistently than a mixture of wides, close-ups, interiors and exteriors.

## Why the color wheels do not move after Shot Match

Shot Match doesn't write a visible set of Lift, Gamma, Gain or curve values that you can inspect. The Resolve 21 manual says the generated image adjustment is applied invisibly as the final adjustment in the selected node, similar to a LUT. The image changes while the familiar primary controls may appear untouched.

That behavior is why a dedicated serial node matters. Label it **Shot Match** and keep it separate from normalization, manual balance, windows and the creative look. If the result fails, delete or reset only that node. If the node contains other work, removing it will remove that work too.

Use separate serial nodes. Shot Match adds an invisible final adjustment to the selected node, so unchanged wheel values do not mean the command did nothing.

This also explains why copying the visible wheel numbers cannot reproduce a Shot Match result. If you need an editable correction, use the automatic result as a visual hint, then rebuild the match with normal primary controls on a fresh node. ## Match multiple clips without creating an undo trap

Each timeline clip has its own undo history. Blackmagic warns that a Shot Match applied to several clips can't be undone across all of them with one global action. A controlled test avoids cleaning up a dozen poor matches clip by clip.

1. Group the scene mentally by camera angle and lighting setup.
2. Pick one target from Angle B and match it to the chosen reference from Angle C.
3. Inspect that cut in split screen, scopes and normal playback.
4. If the test holds, select the other Angle B clips and repeat the same reference match.
5. Test one clip from the next angle before expanding the selection again.

Test one clip per angle. A failed multi-clip match must be removed from each clip's own node and undo history.

Don't run the command on shots that already match. A small automatic change can make a stable angle less consistent. Lightbox is useful after the first pass because it makes a mismatched clip easier to spot across a full scene.

## Refine the match with waveform, RGB parade and vectorscope

A match should survive the cut, not merely produce similar-looking scope shapes. Open Split Screen and choose **Selected Clips** so the reference and target remain visible together. Then work in a fixed order.

1. **Waveform:** compare corresponding black, midtone and highlight regions. Adjust exposure and contrast with primary controls. Don't force unrelated backgrounds to the same level.
2. **RGB parade:** inspect neutral objects and shadows for channel imbalance. Correct the cast while protecting intentional colored light.
3. **Vectorscope:** compare hue and saturation, then check skin-tone direction when skin is present. The traces don't need to become identical.
4. **Playback:** loop the edit. A technically close still can still flash warmer, darker or more saturated during the cut.

Refine in a stable order: exposure and contrast, RGB balance, then hue and saturation. Judge matching regions, not identical scope traces.

## Why Shot Match is not working or gives a bad result

### The reference and target are reversed

Select the clips that should change, then right-click the clip they should resemble. If the wrong clip moves, undo that clip or remove its dedicated node and repeat the selection carefully.

### The clips are in different image states

A normalized reference and flat log target aren't comparable. Check input color spaces, color management, CST placement and whether one clip has a display transform that the other lacks.

### The targets already contain corrections

Shot Match isn't designed to solve around an existing target grade. Start from clean target nodes or a clean version. Keep only a simple primary balance on the reference when possible.

### The shots do not share enough scene information

A frame dominated by a purple wall can distort the comparison with an angle dominated by green foliage. Large unmatched color areas are a documented failure case. Try a more representative reference, match by angle, or switch to manual scopes work.

### The images are too far apart

Severe exposure differences, mixed lighting or damaged highlights may be beyond an automatic match. Correct exposure and white balance first, then test Shot Match again. If the image data is missing, no matching command can restore it.

## Shot Match vs Auto Color, Color Match and copying a grade

## A repeatable scene-matching order

1. Normalize every camera into a consistent working pipeline.
2. Choose one honest reference per lighting setup.
3. Balance that reference with simple primaries.
4. Test Shot Match on one clip from one angle.
5. Refine the target with waveform, parade and vectorscope.
6. Expand to the rest of that angle only after the test works.
7. Review the scene in Lightbox and loop every cut.
8. Add the creative look after the scene is internally consistent.

This order keeps technical matching separate from the look. It also gives every failed step a small rollback surface: one clip, one angle or one dedicated node rather than the whole scene.

### Where is Shot Match to This Clip in DaVinci Resolve?

Open the Color page, select the target clip or clips in the thumbnail timeline, then right-click the reference clip. Choose Shot Match to This Clip from that reference clip's context menu.

### Which clip should I select first for Shot Match?

If it was the last action on the current clip, use Undo. For several clips, revisit them individually. When Shot Match is isolated on its own node, delete or reset that node on each affected clip without disturbing the rest of the grade.

### Does Shot Match work with log footage and different cameras?

It can work with log footage, but the manual says normalized clips produce more reliable results. Do not match different unnormalized log encodings or mix normalized and unnormalized clips. Put both cameras into a consistent color-managed or verified transform pipeline first.

### Why does Shot Match look wrong?

Common causes are a poor reference, existing corrections on the target, mismatched normalization, radically different exposure or lighting, and large background colors that appear in only one angle. Correct the input condition, test one clip again, then finish the match manually with scopes.
