**Quick answer:** for a current Mac, get Resolve from [Blackmagic Design's official page](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) unless you deliberately prefer the Mac App Store and do not depend on external control panels or third-party OpenFX and VST plugins. Check About This Mac first. Resolve 21.0.4 currently lists macOS 15 or later, Apple silicon and 8GB of memory, or 16GB with Fusion, as its Mac minimums.

If About This Mac shows **Processor** followed by an Intel model, stop before installing the current build. Intel Macs are not listed in Blackmagic's current 21.0.4 minimum. That does not prove that every Intel Mac is technically incapable of launching it, but it does put the machine outside the current supported baseline. Use Blackmagic's official archive to find a Resolve release compatible with both the Mac and its macOS version.

**Version checked:** DaVinci Resolve 21.0.4, with Blackmagic's readme updated August 4, 2026\. The product page and App Store listing can change, so their current compatibility text should win over an old tutorial or cached search snippet. For every platform and edition route, use the [download hub](https://davinciresolveclub.com/davinci-resolve-download/).

## Check the Mac Before You Download

Start with the Apple menu, then **About This Mac**. [Apple's current identification guide](https://support.apple.com/en-us/116943?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) says an Apple silicon model shows **Chip**, while an Intel model shows **Processor**. The same window gives you the installed macOS version and memory.

![Apple silicon and Intel Mac check before downloading DaVinci Resolve 21.0.4](https://storage.ghost.io/c/a9/29/a929429b-cfab-4467-b902-a0cd9c90feac/content/images/2026/09/check-mac-before-download-v1.webp)

The current Resolve 21.0.4 minimum names Apple silicon. Intel owners should match an archived Resolve release to their Mac and macOS version instead of following an obsolete install guide.

| Current Resolve 21.0.4 Mac minimum | What it means |
| ------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| macOS 15 Sequoia or later | An older macOS release is outside the current minimum. |
| Apple silicon computer | About This Mac should show Chip, not an Intel Processor field. |
| 8GB system memory | This is a compatibility floor, not a comfortable target for every project. |
| 16GB when using Fusion | Fusion raises Blackmagic's stated memory minimum. |
| Desktop Video 12.9 or later for monitoring | Relevant when the workflow uses supported Blackmagic video I/O hardware. |

These values come from [Blackmagic's Resolve 21.0.4 readme](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/content/readme/f1b3986a11634684b538ff3d1d4b55d6?ref=davinciresolveclub.com). They describe a compatibility floor, not smooth playback with every camera format, noise-reduction stack or Fusion composition. The [complete system requirements guide](https://davinciresolveclub.com/davinci-resolve-system-requirements-2026/) handles the broader hardware question.

M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5 are all Apple silicon families, but they are not interchangeable performance tiers. A MacBook Air and a cooled MacBook Pro can satisfy the same processor class while behaving differently during long exports or heavy effects. Memory capacity, cooling, media engines and the project itself matter. If you are choosing a new machine rather than installing on one you own, compare actual configurations in our [DaVinci Resolve laptop guide](https://davinciresolveclub.com/best-laptop-for-davinci-resolve/).

## Blackmagic Website or Mac App Store?

Both routes are official, but they solve different problems. The [current Mac App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/davinci-resolve/id571213070?mt=12&ref=davinciresolveclub.com), written by Blackmagic, says its build does not support some external control panels and may not work with every third-party OpenFX or VST plugin. It sends users who need those integrations to Blackmagic's support website.

![Blackmagic website versus Mac App Store decision for DaVinci Resolve downloads](https://storage.ghost.io/c/a9/29/a929429b-cfab-4467-b902-a0cd9c90feac/content/images/2026/09/mac-download-source-v1.webp)

The Blackmagic website is the safer default for a professional workflow that uses panels or plugins. The App Store remains an official route when its stated limitations do not affect the job.

| Choose the Blackmagic website when | Choose the Mac App Store when |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| You use or plan to use external control panels. | You prefer App Store installation and its stated limitations do not matter. |
| You depend on third-party OpenFX or VST plugins. | You are installing the App Store build on a current Apple silicon Mac. |
| You want the same direct download path used by Blackmagic's support archive. | You have checked the current compatibility text on the listing. |
| You need the direct Free or Studio package. | You are not assuming that an App Store purchase or build is interchangeable with another license channel. |

My default for a working edit station is the direct Blackmagic build, especially when plugins or a panel are involved. That is a compatibility choice, not a speed claim. We found no current primary evidence that one distribution is universally faster or always updated first. Let the actual plugin, panel and license path decide.

## Free or Studio on Mac?

The Free edition does not require a paid Studio license. Studio needs the appropriate license for the distribution channel you choose. Downloading the Studio package does not create that entitlement.

For feature differences, use our [current free-version guide](https://davinciresolveclub.com/davinci-resolve-free-version-features/) and [Free versus Studio comparison](https://davinciresolveclub.com/davinci-resolve-vs-studio/). Price and activation belong in the [cost and license guide](https://davinciresolveclub.com/how-much-does-davinci-resolve-cost/). This page stays focused on getting the correct Mac build installed.

## Download the Direct Mac Installer From Blackmagic

![Official Blackmagic Design download picker with Mac OS X options for DaVinci Resolve Free and Studio](https://storage.ghost.io/c/a9/29/a929429b-cfab-4467-b902-a0cd9c90feac/content/images/2026/09/blackmagic-mac-download-picker.webp)

Blackmagic's current picker still labels the button Mac OS X. The 21.0.4 readme gives the actual current minimum as macOS 15 or later on Apple silicon.

1. Go to the official Blackmagic Resolve product page.
2. Pick the Free download or the Studio route that matches your license.
3. Select **Mac OS X** in Blackmagic's download picker.
4. Complete the requested registration information if the Free download asks for it.
5. Save the file locally and let the download finish completely.
6. If the browser saved a compressed archive, expand it before running the installer.

This site does not host or repackage the installer. We also do not publish a fixed package size or an invented checksum because no stable signed hash was exposed in the observed public picker. The simplest provenance check is to begin on Blackmagic's own product or [support page](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/?ref=davinciresolveclub.com).

## Back Up an Existing Project Library Before Updating

Installing for the first time? Skip to the next section. Updating a working system? Protect the downgrade path before the new version opens a production project.

Blackmagic says it made an effort to keep the 21.0.4 project library compatible with 20.3.2\. It also says that individual projects created or opened in 21.0.4 are no longer accessible in 20.3.2\. Reinstalling the old application is therefore not a complete rollback plan.

1. Create a full project-library backup.
2. Export separate backups of active or irreplaceable projects.
3. Record the current Resolve version and any critical plugin versions.
4. Keep the backups away from the same cache or working-media location.
5. Open a duplicate test project in the new version before production work.

The full sequence is in our [safe Resolve update workflow](https://davinciresolveclub.com/update-davinci-resolve-safely/). A copy of the application in the Trash is not a project-library backup.

## Install the Blackmagic Build on macOS

Blackmagic's current instruction is concise: double-click the DaVinci Resolve Installer icon and follow the onscreen steps. Read every macOS prompt before approving it and use an administrator account or credentials when the installer requests them.

1. Find the downloaded package and expand it if needed.
2. Double-click the Resolve Installer icon.
3. Confirm that the package came from the Blackmagic download you just requested.
4. Follow the installer and leave the app in the normal Applications location.
5. Restart only when macOS or the installer asks you to.

A blocked installer is not a reason to switch off Gatekeeper. Apple's [current safe-app guidance](https://support.apple.com/en-au/102445?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) explains that macOS checks developer-distributed packages for a Developer ID signature and notarization. After trying the exact trusted file once, review System Settings > Privacy & Security. Use **Open Anyway** only when the warning names the Blackmagic package obtained from the official source. That creates a narrow exception; globally weakening app security does not.

## Install From the Mac App Store

In the Mac App Store, find the current Resolve listing and read its compatibility section again before installing with the intended Apple Account. The listing currently requires macOS 15 or later and a current Apple silicon Mac, with 8GB of system memory or 16GB when using Fusion.

Direct-build fixes and App Store fixes are not interchangeable. The Blackmagic forum's clean-install steps, the Uninstall Resolve icon and license behavior may not map one-for-one to an App Store installation. Identify the source of this copy before following removal advice.

## Prove the First Launch With Real Media

![DaVinci Resolve Mac installation and first-launch acceptance test with a real camera clip](https://storage.ghost.io/c/a9/29/a929429b-cfab-4467-b902-a0cd9c90feac/content/images/2026/09/mac-install-first-launch-v1.webp)

A successful launch is only the start. Verify the project library, storage path, source codec, playback, audio and a short export.

1. Launch Resolve and confirm that it reaches the Project Manager.
2. If this is an update, use a test library or duplicate project first.
3. Check media, cache and gallery locations before generating large files.
4. Import one clip from the camera, phone or screen recorder you actually use.
5. Play and scrub it, apply a simple correction and confirm audio output.
6. Export a short section and play the result outside Resolve.

A friendly sample clip does not validate a project built around 10-bit HEVC, RAW, multicam, temporal effects or Fusion. Use the media that normally causes work. When playback is the only failure, follow our [slow-playback diagnosis](https://davinciresolveclub.com/davinci-resolve-slow-playback/) before reinstalling the application.

## If Resolve Will Not Install or Open on Mac

| Symptom | First check |
| --------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| The current installer will not run on an Intel Mac | Intel is outside the current 21.0.4 listed minimum. Use Blackmagic's archive and match an older Resolve release to the Mac and macOS version. |
| macOS says the package cannot be opened | Verify the official source and exact alert, then follow Apple's narrow Privacy & Security exception path only when appropriate. |
| Resolve opens but a panel or plugin is missing | Check whether this is the Mac App Store build and compare the device or plugin with the App Store limitations. |
| Resolve opens but media is slow or offline | Separate source-codec, storage, permission and performance problems from the installation itself. |
| An older Resolve version will not open an updated project | Restore the library or individual-project backup made before 21.0.4 opened it. |

Make one reversible change at a time. Deleting preferences, libraries and cache together erases useful evidence and can create a second problem. Start with the exact error, build source, Mac chip, macOS version and one representative clip.

## How to Uninstall Resolve on Mac

For the direct Blackmagic build, the 21.0.4 readme says to double-click the **Uninstall Resolve** icon. An App Store installation follows the normal macOS app-removal path. In either case, removing the application is separate from deleting project libraries, source media, cache, galleries and exports.

Back up projects before removing anything. For a clean reinstall, identify the install source, license channel and exact problem first. A destructive “clean up everything” pass is rarely the safest first repair.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is DaVinci Resolve free on Mac?

Yes. The Free edition is available for Mac from Blackmagic Design and through the Mac App Store. Studio is a separate paid edition. Pick the distribution and license path deliberately, especially if you use external panels or third-party plugins.

### Does DaVinci Resolve 21 work on Intel Macs?

Intel Macs are not listed in Blackmagic's current Resolve 21.0.4 Mac minimum, which specifies an Apple silicon computer. Do not treat an old Resolve configuration PDF as current evidence. Use Blackmagic's official archive and match an older version to the exact Intel Mac and supported macOS release.

### Does DaVinci Resolve work on M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5 Macs?

M1 through M5 are Apple silicon families, so they satisfy the current processor class named by Blackmagic. Performance still varies with chip tier, memory, cooling, codec and project complexity. Meeting the class and minimum memory does not guarantee smooth results for every workload.

### Should I download Resolve from Blackmagic or the Mac App Store?

Use the Blackmagic website when you need external control panels or third-party OpenFX or VST plugins. Blackmagic's current App Store listing says some panels are unsupported and some plugins may be incompatible. The App Store is still an official route when those limitations do not affect you.

### How much memory does DaVinci Resolve need on Mac?

Blackmagic's current Resolve 21.0.4 minimum is 8GB of system memory or 16GB when using Fusion. That is a compatibility minimum. Larger projects, Fusion, noise reduction and multitasking can justify substantially more memory.

### Why will DaVinci Resolve not open on my Mac?

First check Apple silicon versus Intel, the macOS version, the download source and the exact security or startup error. App Store plugin limitations, an unsupported current Intel configuration, a blocked installer or an updated project library are different problems and need different fixes.

### Can I update Resolve on Mac without backing up?

You can install an update, but opening a production project without a backup removes a safe downgrade path. Blackmagic says projects created or opened in 21.0.4 cannot then be opened in 20.3.2\. Back up the full library and export important projects first.
