# DaVinci Resolve for Linux: Download & Install

**Quick answer:** DaVinci Resolve has a real native Linux build. Download it from [Blackmagic Design's official page](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/?ref=davinciresolveclub.com), choose the Linux package for Free or Studio, extract the ZIP and run the included installer. The important catch comes before the install: Blackmagic's current Resolve 21.0.4 requirements name **Rocky Linux 8.6**, 32GB of RAM and a supported discrete GPU. Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and Arch can work, but they are compatibility installations, not the support baseline printed in the current readme.

I would not move a working project to Linux merely because the installer opens. First prove that the exact camera codec, audio codec, GPU driver and Deliver preset you rely on work together. Linux is a strong Resolve platform when those four pieces line up. When they do not, the failure often appears after installation, when a familiar MP4 will not import or the GPU is invisible.

## Download the Linux Package From Blackmagic

Do not start with a package repository, an AUR helper, a random \`.deb\` file or a mirror that puts “latest” in its title. Blackmagic distributes the current Linux ZIP from its own product and support pages. Community packaging can solve a distro mismatch later, but it should not replace the original vendor package.

Choose Linux inside Blackmagic Design's own download picker. Select Free or Studio first; the Studio installer still needs a valid license.

1. Open the official [DaVinci Resolve product page](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/?ref=davinciresolveclub.com).
2. Choose **Free Download Now** unless you already own a Studio activation key or dongle.
3. Select the **Linux** package.
4. Complete Blackmagic's registration form if it appears.
5. Save the ZIP to a local drive with room for both the archive and its extracted contents.

The release checked for this page is **DaVinci Resolve 21.0.4**, whose readme was updated on August 4, 2026\. Blackmagic can replace the current download, so the live version shown by the vendor should always beat a number copied into this article or an old video tutorial.

## Decide Whether You Want a Supported or Compatibility Install

The word “Linux” hides the most important decision. Blackmagic's current 21.0.4 readme names Rocky Linux 8.6\. Its marketing download screen also mentions the much older CentOS 7.3, but the current release readme does not. I would use the release-specific readme as the operational source and treat Rocky 8.6 as the clean support baseline.

Rocky Linux follows the vendor baseline. Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and Arch may be workable, but every extra packaging or library step becomes part of your own maintenance burden.

That tool is third-party software, not a Blackmagic installer. Read the project's current instructions and source before running it, and keep the untouched Blackmagic ZIP so you know which vendor package was transformed.

## Run the Resolve 21 Linux Preflight

Blackmagic's [Resolve 21.0.4 readme](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/content/readme/f1b3986a11634684b538ff3d1d4b55d6?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) lists the following Linux minimums. They are launch and support boundaries, not a guarantee of smooth 4K noise reduction, large Fusion comps or multicam playback.

- A GPU supporting **OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 12.8**

Check the readme again on install day because driver minimums move. Also verify that the operating system sees the intended discrete GPU before Resolve is involved. If the desktop is silently running through an integrated adapter or a generic fallback driver, changing settings inside Resolve cannot create the missing CUDA or OpenCL stack.

## Check Your Media Before You Change Operating Systems

A filename is not a codec test. \`.mp4\` and \`.mov\` are containers; the video and audio inside them determine whether the clip can be decoded. Linux also has a different Free-versus-Studio codec matrix from Windows and macOS. The newest public Blackmagic matrix I could verify is still labelled [DaVinci Resolve 20 Supported Codecs](https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/SupportNotes/DaVinci%5FResolve%5F20%5FSupported%5FCodec%5FList.pdf?ref=davinciresolveclub.com): its Rocky Linux table lists H.264 and H.265 decode as Studio-only with NVIDIA GPU acceleration, and lists no AAC decode or encode. That document also warns that codec support can change, so treat it as a preflight warning and check for a newer matrix on Blackmagic's support page when you install Resolve 21.

Before installing, collect three small files:

1. A representative camera or phone clip with its original audio.
2. A clip from the heaviest production format you expect to grade.
3. A short delivery reference matching the format your client or platform requires.

Those files are more useful than a synthetic sample. If your normal work is 10-bit HEVC with AAC audio, a friendly DNxHR clip proving that the Media Pool works tells you almost nothing about the actual migration.

## Extract and Run the Official Linux Installer

The Blackmagic download arrives as a ZIP containing a \`.run\` installer and accompanying instructions. Extract the complete archive first. Running a file from inside an archive viewer is a good way to create a misleading missing-file or permission failure.

Keep the vendor ZIP, extract it into its own folder, make the included \`.run\` file executable and follow the installer prompts from that folder.

1. Extract the whole downloaded ZIP into a new folder.
2. Open the included Linux installation instructions and read the notes shipped with that exact release.
3. Make the \`.run\` installer executable in the file manager or with `chmod +x`.
4. Run the installer with the privileges it requests.
5. Do not copy commands from an old tutorial until you have confirmed that its distro and Resolve release match yours.
6. Reboot when the GPU driver or workstation policy requires it, then launch Resolve normally.

On a supported Rocky workstation, the vendor installer should be the shortest path. On Ubuntu or Debian, the installer may meet package and library differences. It is also the point to stop if a script asks you to disable package protections, replace broad system libraries or paste an opaque command as root.

## Free or Studio on Linux

The Free Linux installer is a legitimate full application, not a trial. The current readme says the free edition uses the same high-quality processing but limits mastering/output and several advanced features; on Windows and Linux it also supports one processing GPU. Studio adds licensed features and broader professional-format support, but downloading Studio does not create a license.

For Linux specifically, make the codec matrix part of that decision. A Studio license may remove an important H.264/H.265 limitation, but it does not mean every audio codec, container and GPU combination becomes interchangeable with Windows.

## Run a First-Project Acceptance Test

Do this before copying a project library or calling the migration finished. You are testing the whole path. Seeing the Project Manager is only one checkpoint.

Use the real Resolve workflow shown in [Blackmagic's Edit page image](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/?ref=davinciresolveclub.com): Media Pool to timeline to Deliver. A clean launch without a representative import and export is not a production test.

1. Confirm Resolve reaches the Project Manager without an unsupported GPU message.
2. Create a disposable test project rather than opening the only copy of active work.
3. Import each representative file and check picture plus audio.
4. Play and scrub the clip, add one basic color correction and confirm that GPU processing stays stable.
5. Render a short section to the delivery format you actually use.
6. Play the exported file outside Resolve and verify audio, color and duration.

Change one reversible layer at a time. A mass library replacement can turn one missing dependency into a damaged desktop. Preserve the downloaded installer, the exact Resolve version, the GPU driver version and any community script revision used. Those four details make a failure reproducible.

## How to Uninstall DaVinci Resolve on Linux

Use the uninstall route shipped with the exact package or the package manager route created by your compatibility method. A Blackmagic \`.run\` install and a MakeResolveDeb-generated package do not necessarily remove themselves the same way.

Uninstalling the application should not be treated as permission to delete project libraries, source media, cache or gallery stills. Back up the project library first, identify each storage location, remove the application through the same installation path and only clean cache after you have confirmed that the source media is safe.
