# DaVinci Resolve for Chromebook: What Actually Works

**Quick answer:** you cannot install a supported native version of DaVinci Resolve on a Chromebook as of September 3, 2026\. Blackmagic offers Resolve 21 for Mac, Windows and Linux, plus a separate iPad app. It does not offer a ChromeOS download, a browser edition or a Chromebook APK.

The Linux button on Blackmagic's site is not a hidden Chromebook route. ChromeOS runs Linux apps inside a Debian development environment, while Blackmagic's current Linux requirements target a workstation-class Linux setup with discrete GPU support. Google also lists hardware acceleration, including GPU and video decode, as unsupported in the Chromebook Linux environment. That removes the part Resolve depends on most.

## Choose the Job Before You Choose the Workaround

A Chromebook can still help you make video. The useful question is not “Can I force the Resolve installer to open?” It is “Which part of this project must happen on the Chromebook?”

There is no supported native Resolve route on ChromeOS. Choose remote Resolve when the application itself matters, or a Chromebook editor when finishing the video matters more than the software name.

If you only need to submit a two-minute class video, building a remote workstation may be unnecessary. If you must learn Resolve for a course or deliver a Resolve project archive, switching to a different editor may create a different problem. Decide which constraint is real before spending money or changing the Chromebook.

## Why the Linux Installer Does Not Make Resolve a Chromebook App

Google's [Chromebook Linux setup guide](https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/9145439?hl=en&ref=davinciresolveclub.com) describes a Debian environment intended for command-line tools, code editors and development software. It is a containerized guest inside ChromeOS, not the same thing as installing Blackmagic's supported Linux platform directly on workstation hardware.

Both routes contain Linux, but they do not expose the same operating system, drivers or GPU path. Resolve support is defined by the complete platform, not the word Linux alone.

The mismatch has three layers:

1. **Operating system:** the Chromebook environment is Debian. Blackmagic's [current Resolve 21 readme](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/content/readme/f1b3986a11634684b538ff3d1d4b55d6?ref=davinciresolveclub.com) names Rocky Linux 8.6 as its Linux baseline.
2. **Graphics:** Resolve relies heavily on GPU compute and video processing. Google currently lists GPU and video-decode hardware acceleration among the features not supported in its Chromebook Linux environment.
3. **Hardware access:** a container does not expose a Chromebook's integrated hardware in the same way as a native workstation with a supported driver stack and discrete GPU.

You may find terminal scripts, developer-mode instructions or videos that reach an installer window. That is not the same as a usable editing system. A successful package extraction does not prove media import, smooth playback, codec decoding, Fusion, audio output or rendering. We found no Blackmagic statement that turns Crostini, ChromeOS Developer Mode or a Linux flag into a supported Resolve configuration.

Do not disable Chromebook security or replace the operating system just to test a claim from an undated tutorial. Those steps can erase local data, break managed-device rules and still leave you without the GPU path Resolve needs. If experimenting with Linux is the goal, treat it as a separate technical project, not a reliable way to finish client footage.

## Option 1: Run Resolve on Another Computer and Control It from Chromebook

This is the only practical route when you specifically need the real Resolve interface but only have a Chromebook in front of you. Resolve runs on a supported host computer; the Chromebook sends keyboard and pointer input and receives a streamed view.

Google's [Chrome Remote Desktop instructions](https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/1649523?hl=en&ref=davinciresolveclub.com) cover access to applications on a remote Mac, Windows or Linux computer. Set it up on the host while you can still reach that machine locally. Then test the Chromebook connection before the host is left unattended.

The supported computer does the decode, playback and render work. The Chromebook is a remote control and streamed display, so network quality affects responsiveness and image fidelity.

1. Install Resolve on the supported host and confirm that the project opens locally.
2. Keep camera originals and the project library on storage attached to that host, not scattered between the Chromebook and remote computer.
3. Generate proxy media on the host for a lighter timeline if the source is difficult to decode.
4. Configure remote access, power settings and a secure PIN while physically at the host.
5. From the Chromebook, test keyboard shortcuts, pointer capture, audio and a short timeline playback.
6. Render on the host and transfer only the finished file or review copy.

Remote control is useful for selects, bins, rough cuts, titles, review changes and launching exports. It is a poor place to make final color or critical audio judgments because the remote picture and sound pass through a network stream. Check the final grade and mix on a trusted display and audio path connected to the Resolve host.

Also plan for failure: the host must stay awake, online and cool enough to render. Keep a second way to reach someone near the machine if an OS update, login prompt or disconnected drive blocks the session.

## Option 2: Edit in the Browser with Clipchamp

Microsoft explicitly documents [Clipchamp on Chromebook](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/clipchamp/using-the-clipchamp-video-editor-on-a-chromebook?ref=davinciresolveclub.com). It runs in Chrome without a desktop installation and can import from the Chromebook or connected cloud storage. This is a cleaner answer for a short finished video than trying to make a workstation editor survive inside Crostini.

Microsoft also warns that some Chromebooks can struggle with projects longer than ten minutes or with very large 4K files. Treat that as a planning signal rather than a universal hard cutoff. Hardware, effects, source codecs and free storage all matter. Start with one representative clip, complete a short edit and export it before importing an entire shoot.

A browser editor is not “DaVinci Resolve online.” Project files, effects, shortcuts, color tools and collaboration models are different. Use this route when the deliverable matters more than keeping a Resolve project.

## Option 3: Check a Local ChromeOS or Android Editor

Google lists video editors for Chromebook and supports Android apps on compatible models. The important word is compatible. Google's [Play compatibility guide](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2851648?hl=en&ref=davinciresolveclub.com) says an app may be unavailable because of device, screen, Android version, carrier or region. The Play Store result on your exact Chromebook is more reliable than a list article.

[LumaFusion's current Google Play listing](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.luma%5Ftouch.lumafusion&ref=davinciresolveclub.com) describes support for Android and ChromeOS, and Google has promoted it as a multitrack editor for Chromebook Plus. It is a separate paid editor, not a Resolve port. Check the live price, device compatibility and feature set before buying. If your Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, the administrator may also block Play Store installs.

Match the tool to the delivery: browser editors suit lighter jobs, compatible local apps add offline control, remote access preserves Resolve, and a dedicated computer handles demanding finishing.

Before paying, test the parts that decide whether the editor is usable:

- Can it import the camera's actual video and audio codecs?
- Does a five-minute timeline remain responsive with your effects?
- Can it export the required resolution, frame rate and file format?
- Is there a watermark, storage cap or paid feature blocking delivery?
- Can you back up or move the project itself, as well as export the video?

## What a Chromebook Plus Changes

A Chromebook Plus can offer more RAM, a newer processor and a better screen than an entry-level Chromebook. That improves browser and Android editing, but it does not create a ChromeOS build of Resolve. Operating-system support and GPU-driver access remain separate from the number printed on a spec sheet.

The key test is a finished round trip. Import representative media, edit long enough to expose performance problems, export the intended format and play the result outside the editor. Opening a timeline is not proof that the workflow can deliver.
