On August 16, 2026, Blackmagic’s live support feed lists 21.0.4 as the latest stable desktop update for macOS, Windows, Windows ARM and Linux. The changes worth understanding are the Photo page, Studio-only AI tools, deeper keyframe controls, a layer-list option for Color nodes, Krokodove graphics in Fusion and track folders in Fairlight. Quick answer: upgrade when one of those changes removes a recurring bottleneck, not because the version number is newer. Back up the Project Library and export irreplaceable projects first. Blackmagic keeps the 21.0.4 library compatible with 20.3.2, but any project opened or created in 21.0.4 can no longer be opened in 20.3.2. ## DaVinci Resolve 21 Release Status and Latest Version Resolve 21 left beta on June 3, 2026\. Search snippets and third-party download pages can lag behind a maintenance release. The August 5 maintenance release, 21.0.4, adds proxy relinking across different formats, Sony FX-5 X-OCN support, APIs for timeline selection and render settings, and fixes for real-time playback on large cached timelines. Those are targeted maintenance items; they do not change the major Resolve 21 feature set. A point release is not a reason to skip testing. Plug-ins, scripts, codecs, GPU drivers and a specific project can expose problems that do not appear in a clean installation. ### What the 21.0.x Updates Changed - 21.0.1: corrected DNG and Apple ProRAW color issues, Photo-page and Fusion cases, H.265 HDR output and added Sony α7R VI ARW and Affinity RGB 16-bit decoding. - 21.0.2: fixed bypass thumbnails, retime-curve display, copied keyframes, slower IntelliSearch performance, Inspector text and several media-pool cases. - 21.0.3: added retime/frame-curve ease modes and improved interlaced media, keyframe editing, multicam audio and PSD imports. - 21.0.4: added cross-format proxy relinking, Sony FX-5 X-OCN support, selection/render scripting and large-cache playback fixes. Treat each line as a reason to test one affected workflow, not as permission to move a live job immediately. If a point release fixes your exact failure, reproduce the failure with a copied project, install the update, then rerun the same media and deliverable. ## Photo Page: the Largest Workflow Change The new Photo page imports and organizes stills in albums, searches a library, reframes at source resolution and carries images into Resolve’s Color and Fusion workflows. It's most useful for hybrid jobs that already need the same grades, effects, collaboration and delivery environment for stills and video. The core Photo page is available in Free. Tethered Capture is marked Studio Version Only in the Resolve 21 Reference Manual, and any Studio-only AI tool or Resolve FX keeps that license boundary when used on a still. Camera control is also model-specific, so verify Blackmagic’s supported camera list before promising a tethered session. Don't call Photo a Lightroom replacement until it passes your own catalog, metadata, filename, batch-export and handoff tests. The Reference Manual marks IntelliSearch, CineFocus, Speech Generator, Slate Finder and Slate ID, Motion DeBlur, UltraSharpen, Face Age Transformer, Face Reshaper and Blemish Removal as Studio Version Only. It is a Studio feature and its models are separate downloads. - IntelliSearch: analyzes Media Pool clips, then searches people, objects, faces, transcript text and metadata. Faster and Better model packages are separate downloads. - CineFocus: creates a virtual depth and bokeh treatment and can keyframe a rack-focus effect. It can't recover optical detail that the camera never captured. - Speech Generator: creates narration from typed text using supplied or custom voice models. Custom voice use requires permission from the voice owner. - Face tools: age, reshape or reduce superficial blemishes after analysis and tracking. Review continuity and consent, not only technical quality. - Motion Deblur and UltraSharpen: target blur or softness through different processes. Test on the problem shot and inspect artifacts at delivery resolution. - Slate ID: detects a clapperboard and extracts slate metadata after the corresponding model is installed. Start with the job: find one shot in 800 clips, generate a temporary voice, reshape bokeh, clean a blurred take or group 60 audio tracks. Record the current time or failure, run the Resolve 21 tool on representative media, then compare accuracy, correction time and final render. A feature that creates more cleanup isn't an upgrade for that job. ## Cut, Edit and Graphics Changes Cut and Edit gain stronger keyframe and curve controls, including Loop, Ping Pong and Relative modes, multi-clip adjustment and four-point Bezier easing. Fusion effects can be adjusted from the Cut and Edit keyframe editors, which reduces page switching for routine animation work. Resolve 21 also accepts supported OGraf HTML and Lottie graphics in the Media Pool with alpha. Fusion integrates the Krokodove toolset with more than 70 graphics and updates the Macro Editor, while Fairlight adds collapsible track folders, six-band clip EQ, EQ and level matching, and Chain FX. Studio adds the Neural Engine and named AI tools, more Resolve FX and processing options, higher frame-rate and resolution support, and other professional delivery features. Buy Studio for a measured blocker. A Photo user who needs albums, grading and standard delivery may remain on Free; a team that repeatedly needs IntelliSearch, tethered capture, Face tools or high-end output may recover the $295 desktop license cost quickly. Confirm the exact feature before paying. ## System Requirements: Check the Distribution You Install Blackmagic’s 21.0.4 release notes set the macOS minimum at macOS 15 Sequoia, 8 GB of memory or 16 GB with Fusion, and an Apple Silicon computer. Windows x86, Windows ARM and Linux have separate CPU, RAM, GPU, driver and operating-system requirements. A minimum requirement only answers whether the installer is supported. Codec, resolution, frame rate, temporal effects, Fusion complexity, VRAM, memory and storage throughput determine whether your timeline actually plays and renders comfortably. ## How to Upgrade to Resolve 21 Safely 1. Read the current 21.0.4 release notes and verify operating system, GPU driver, codec, plug-in and scripting compatibility. 2. Create a full Project Library backup from Project Manager. 3. Export a DRP for every irreplaceable active project and preserve the original media and license information. 4. Install Resolve 21 without deleting the previous installer or backups. 5. Open a copied project, then test playback, Fusion, audio routing, color, subtitles and every required deliverable. 6. Open production work only after the copied project renders, reopens and passes visual and audio QC. The 21.0.4 pre-installation note names Resolve 20.3.2: the project library can remain accessible from that maintenance version, but projects created or opened in 21.0.4 are no longer accessible there. A library backup protects the database; individual DRP exports give critical projects a second recovery path.
